General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

after working for a landscaping company when i was younger i would never buy a diesel for plowing...if u forget to plug it in the night befor ethe storm you're not gonna go anywhere and alot of people waiting to have their parking lots and driveways cleared are gonna be pi$$ed...but nowadays the new trucks I hear have better startign systems...my 95 takes a long time to warm up and deforst the windows and won't start if its a serious storm and i forgot to plug it

we had a couple gmc 6L gassers standard cab...and they were perfect for the plowing i thought

Mr. T, you're in Ontario and he's in Pennsylvania. The math works out well. I've started my '96 with two cycles of the heater grid at -5F (unplugged) and if one simply holds the throttle to 800-900 rpm, it will smooth out fairly quickly. I would suggest running 5w-40 Rotella synthetic in the winter to measurably improve cold-start and run performance.

Regarding the mega-cab, here is more info on the dually:

I would personally never consider such an oversize vechile for snow-plowing. While working at a college a few years back while still in school, we had two short-bed 1/2 ton 4wd Chevy's with the 305 V-8 and automatics. They were ideal lighter-duty plow trucks, great for parking lots, driveways and such. They fit into tight spots, and being regular cabs, were easy to see out of. For larger work, we had two F-350's with dump beds (all gas and AT's). Also duallies tend to be much more of a handful in the snow due to increased tread contact area.

I would also never consider a new truck to plow with. It's one of the hardest workouts you can give your frame and suspension, plus there is always the possbility of hitting something at any time with no warning. I would use the old truck to work with and the new one [or a new civic- gas prices, etc.] to run to town. Just my $.02

Smile Re: Plow

Even in the coldest weather around here ... if I'm working the truck .... running 8 to 12 hrs ... I don't feel the truck is not going to warm up ... there not just sitting there idling ...
I would figure that a diesel would be fine to plow with .
