Mopar fuel filter $37!!! Did I get boned?

I went to the local dealer to pick up a Mopar oil filter for my 2nd oil change and decided to have the guy pull a fuel filter too. When he gave me the total I asked how much the fuel fliter alone was and he said $37.35. I told him I was pretty sure that Fleetguards are around $12. I just checked Geno's and I was right.

Are the Mopar's that outrageous?

Dummie question: The box the fuel fliter came in said "fuel-water separator". Is that the same thing as the fuel filter? Sorry, but this is my first Diesel.

Same thing as a fuel filter, Mopar just got you real hard and didn't even give you any lube.

Yup! For one MoPar Fuel filter for my '97, I was charged ~$51.
Right after I bought my CTD, I knew it would be wise to have a quality spare fuel filter so I grudgingly bought my first and LAST filter from a DC dealer...
What a raping! Such a memorable event that it was, I learned my lesson quickly and thereafter I buy a 4-2-1 kit from Geno's, for a cheaper price than one MoPar fuel and oil filter!
I tell myself I am helping pay down the cost of that initial filter by buying the 4-2-1 maintenance filter kits.
Hanging around the DTR can sure save a person a wad of money!

BTW,
My 81 Toyota diesel PU had a proprietary spin-on fuel filter that was ONLY available from Toyota!
$22 each in 1981 dollars! OUCH!
After the proprietary-ness wore off and aftermarket suppliers eventually started making them, it was amazing that Toyota dropped the price for those same filters to $7 each...
At least Toyota DROPPED their price!

I have learned from shopping around dealer to dealer, prices can vary allot.

The wife had a tsb for her van for the ecm, dealer in st louis $650. dealer half way home $425. Local dealer $265. Car quest = $92. EXACT SAME PART NUMBER and manufactor! I looked at the tags on each one. This has happend more than once. Got to shop around...

I will definately be ordering the 4-2 kit from Geno's. Don't think I'll need the air filter since I'm putting on an intake one of these days...

I buy mine at the cummins store, for the fuel it is like 12$ and the oil is about the same. It is a fleet guard filter, the mechanic at dodge said they are the same, and i can't tell any difference.

***Update*** I just came back from the Cummins dealer/service center and picked up an oil filter and fuel filter for about $26 total. I compared the Fleetguard filters to the Mopar filters that I bought earlier this morning, and they are identical, both the oil filter, and fuel filter. In fact, the Mopar fuel filter even says "stratapore" on it. Also, both oil filters have the same "9900" stamped in metal, near the gasket. Weird stuff!!!

Now, maybe I should be smart and return the overpriced $37 Mopar fuel filter to the dealer. That would save me about $25 or so. My luck, they'll charge me a 50% restocking fee, which could cause me to commence an azz-whoopin.

Live and learn.....again, this is my first Diesel. They won't get me next time!

I just paid 10.something for the fuel filter, and 8.69 for the oil. I normally get the LF3894 Stratapore from Kenworth in Spokane for 7.50-8.50 (depending on who's working). I had to settle for the LF3959(?) non-stratapore for the same price here in Bozeman. When I get back to Spokane, I'm going to stock up again.

The Mopar filters ARE Fleetguard filters. Fleetguard was started by Cummins. The fuel filters from Carquest or NAPA are also Fleetguards in the respective boxes. Look at the paper instructions that come in the box. It has a Fleetguard number printed on it.

A similar thing with the BHAF. It may come in a Wix, or Carquest box, but it is still a Donaldson.

I bought a fuel filter from a dealer last year for about $40.00. Inquired on the DTR site when I got home, and promptly carried it back the next day. Parts guy was very unhappy (so was I). He said I normally don't give refunds, and I told him I normally don't get robbed. Paid about $10.00 @ Cummins Mid South.

Unless you get the Fleetguard one, then it's a Fleetguard.

Same thing is going on with my Jeep turbo-diesel. Mopar oil filter for it is $12.50. I've been going to NAPA and getting the Gold filters for $5.92 but the Jeep people keep telling me only the OEM Mopar filters will be good for the engine. I say it's BS. Mopar just wants to rape people.

I purchased a NAPA fuel filter once in a pinch. When I opened the box, it said "Fleetguard" embossed in the rubber top. I think it was around 14 bucks.

I left a Fleetguard fuel filter in the solvent tank overnight, when the paint came off it said Wix on it.
Wix makes Napa Gold filters and apparently Fleetguard fuel filters.
