(MERGED) Diesel Tundra concept

i really like it. could use a bit of work looks wise and the diamond plate bedliner has got to go. but other wise if i had the cash i would buy it. however i would chop down the shifter and slap in a 6 speed

Considering this was thrown together without a great deal of planning/engineering (and we know how good the Toyota engineers are) it's a pretty good representation of things to come...the drive train isn't cast in stone either, there are several acceptable combinations available and I'd bet that the list could include Cummins...(just a thought)
I think the truck has potential in the looks department and I'm guessing that once fully designed/engineered that Toyota will be able to produce this truck for less than the big 3 if they choose to do so...the competition will be good for the market unless the big 3 still don't "get it"

'Nuther article
Provides a little more info:

"A spokesman for Hino said the engine is too big for the Tundra, but could be scaled down to around 6.0 liters. He said Toyota has not decided whether its wants an inline six-cylinder engine — a layout used by the Dodge Ram diesel — or a V-8, which is used by Ford and GM diesel trucks. Toyota, he said, has not chosen an engine supplier for the truck."

If Toyota built this concept just to create interest, they sure succeeded. I'm pretty sure Toyota will soon be building TRUE 3/4 and 1 ton pickups. Will I buy one???? Don't know. Will it push Dodge, Ford, and GM to build even better trucks? YOU BET!!!!!

If that truck had a Ram badge on it you guys wouldn't be kicking so much dirt on the idea. I have said it once and I will say it again, I had two Nissans and a Toyota before this truck, and I would have another one.
I like it. It looks like a refined Dodge and I'll bet the back seat has more room than my quad cab. At least the Toyota is made in the US.

It looks OK, better than my 1st gen anyway, of course thats not saying much! The drivetrain is awesome!! I hope that an Eaton 5 or 6 speed manual is actually an option if this pickup ever goes into production. Who cares if the engine only produces 300 hp and 600 lb/ft of torque. As others have already mentioned, that is still plenty of power and the inline 6 should be a very durable engine. I hope to see something like this available in the future! Who knows, I might have some $$$ by then!
