Mercedes Diesel To Come?

My cousin told me the other day that Dodge is getting rid of Cummins and going with a Mercedes Diesel. I told him he was crazy and that Dodge had a contract with Cummins until the year 2007 to continue purchasing the Cummins engine for dodge trucks. I also thought they just renegoiated this contract and extended it but maybe I'm making that up! NOW, is he completely wrong or just confused. Like is dodge going to offer a smaller diesel made by mercedes for their Jeep Liberty or Will a Mercedes Diesel be an option as well as a Cummins? Please help me set this kid straight!

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

I don't think you'll see a Mercedes diesel in a Dodge, ever! Not that it's a bad engine, it isn't. It's just that Cummins is a better engine, suited for pickups. And, wouldn't you want the best engine in your truck? I certainly would. The Mercedes is being put into the Jeep Liberty & Freightliner Sprinters. Once all the bugs are worked out, you'll probably see more of them in other Jeep vehicles.

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

I seem to recall an article some time ago that DC was going to come out with a diesel truck based on a Mercedes design and engine for the military. I'll have to do some poking around and see if I can find it.

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

Hmm..... that 5 cyl diesel in the sprinter would make a mighty nice 1/2 ton truck motor...Hmmm : . Wonder if there is any chance of something like that happening!

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

the 5.9 is a great engine in a 1/2 ton just did it got to work out traction problems. truck will fly. 2.71 axle low gear is useless. using manuel valve body dont need anything but 3rd gear.

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

It only make sense for them to go to Mercedes eventually. Why would you continue buying and outsiders engine whan you own company has an engine that could work?
I'll never own one with a Mercedes diesel in it, you can bet on that.

The 5-cyl in the Sprinter is the same engine they had in the 300D back in the 60's. It's very efficient. I doubt you will see a straight six in a Jeep or Durango. Why? Because of the weight. And you want fantastic mileage, which is the purpose of the diesel.

Thats the funniest generalism I've ever heard. The 5cyl diesel isn't 'the same' as the 300d engine, or even close to being the same. The engine in the sprinters is the 'same' as in the E270CDI offered in europe etc...its a commonrail direct injection engine that is highly refined, nothing like the older mb diesels. Its quiet, it doesn't smoke, and has so many more electronics than the old diesels it's not even funny.

The weight? Now thats funny too. They stick it in a C-class which is tiny in comparison to a durango.

Also - mercedes is NOT making the diesel that goes in the liberty, VM Motori out of Italy is.

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

I had the opportunity to drive a Freightliner MT-45 with a MBE 900-170 diesel (170 hp @ 2,300 rpm 420 lb.-ft. @ 1,600 rpm) with an Allison® 1000 series automatic trans for a week at work. The thing was great. Obviously 170HP and 420 LB FT is not enough for us... I'm not sure what other MB engines are around.

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

Maybe you fellas can help me with this one.
I was at the local Mercedes dealer and was told that
Mercedes is not shipping any more Diesels to the US in the
full size line. Meaning that if I wanted a Mercedes S500 with
a diesel I would have to find a used one. Does this sound right?
I have owned a few MB's with diesels and really liked them.
I just sold the 1997 S500 diesel hoping I could find a new one. Now what is the newest year 500 I can buy in the US with a diesel?

Re:Mercedes Diesel To Come?

I believe MB quit imported the big body (S series) diesels in the mid 80's. My dad has owned both the 300D and 300SD Mercedes and they are wonderful cars.
The 2.7L I5 in the Sprinter van is the same engine used in the older Mercedes. Bottom end is the same but the injection went from the Bosch mechanical to the common rail.
