General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Is it true that some people fill up their new fuel water seperator with old crank case oil? If so... why, and why used?

J/Wondering...

Thanks

probably over 75% of the members here do the ps/mmo mix....
Don't know how you came up with this.
A truer statement would be more like that 75% of the members use no additives at all.

I add the PSD cetane treatment for power, plus 16oz two-stroke oil to lube the Inj Pump plungers.

Takin' no chances on the ULSD mix from the fuel blenders.

You're not wrong. Using a bit of MMO will not turn your fuel red.

Almost everyone I know with diesel uses MMO every once in a while. Anywhere from Dodges to Volvos. This also includes boats in Massachusetts with 4-71 and 6-71 Detroits, boats with Marine Cummins, and boats with big Cats.

ETA: Not saying it's the best thing in the world, it's just that I have 15 years of personal experience with it, and know people with quite a bit more.

I tried an experiment. I heated an ounce of MMO and a separate ounce of TCW3 to burnout. The TCW3 left a black ash deposit. The MMO burned clean.

MMO probably has a longer history of being used in diesels than any other additive on the market.(1930's-1940's) It was originaly designed for use in military airplanes and equipment used at high alltitude and cold weather. MMO has never caused any problems in any engines I know of. We have used it in farm equipmet for several generations with nothing but good results.

It wouldn't matter if it turned it red anyway, they send the sample to lab to look for the chemical marker put in offroad fuel, so it would not be an issue unless you had off-road fuel in tank.
