General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Question M.p.g.

Hello folks, I'm new to this website. I would like to know what the mpg on the current diesels (cummins, powerstroke, duramax) are. With diesel being $3.35-$3.50 a gallon, is it practical to buy a diesel as appose to a regular gas engine? I would appreciate any and all comments on this Question. Thank you.

Iv got an 05 and with the 4spd auto and 3.73 gearing, Im seeing between 18-20 consistantly.
IMHO, you cant get that mileage out of a gasser.

IMO its better to get a new gasser. My dad just got an 08 Chevy gasser and it gets 11-12. The 05 dmax thats now my ranch truck and was his gets 13-14. 2mpg better and diesel being 40-50cents more a gallon....extra $7-7500 for the diesel option, I just dont see how its worth it if you dont need the full power of the diesel.

I agree if I didn't need a diesel unless for work purpose I would not purchase one myself. At one time the fuel was .10 to .15 cents cheaper than the regular gas like when I purchased my 03 $1.309 a gallon. We also was going to upgrade to a larger 5th wheel travel trailer and I needed (wanted) the diesel truck for the added weight. I'm just glad now I only live 10 miles from my work, other wise I would probably be driving a economy car like a Honda Civic or if diesel engine something like a VW Jetta that would get a lot higher mileage.

I really don't see how some of the diesel trucks (new or used) or holding there value the way that fuel keeps increasing, maybe the power of credit.

There are many variables for the equation, but if you are buying a diesel to save money, you will lose.

Now if you are like me, it doesnt matter. Diesel all the way

You can get 20 mpg with a diesel, but the truck is 5-7.5k more, oil changes cost a lot more, filters more, cost of replacement parts are double +, headache of finding diesel fuel, etc. etc. It just costs more ,but worth every penny.

I forgot to mention that I have a 33ft. 14000 lb. fifth wheel that I sometimes have to haul. Other than the diesel/gas question, should I get a 3/4 ton or a one ton dually? Thanks again for your responses.

You would probably be fine with a nice 3/4 ton gas engine truck. This is a much different comment than I would have said 2 -3 years ago, but buying one of these new unless it's really needed does not make much sense overall. There's certainly the prospect of value being held, however with the 7 - 8k price differance, and not all that much better mileage than a gas these days, plus the current and pending regualtions regarding emissions and the respecitve maintance that goes along with all this new hardware and the cooling demands placed on MY '07 and newer diesels...well, you get the point perhaps. As a used veichle, it's probably still worth it if you like them and find one that meets your needs.

I just drove a regular-cab, 2500 HD 4wd Chevy, 2007 new body style, with the 6.0L v-8 & 6-speed automatic that had 20k road miles on it (no scrathes on bed or hitch - not used for much hauling) and the Chevy delaer was asking $21,990. A cash buyer would have walked away with it for right at 20k if he knew how to deal. It was a nice rig and drove out very well, even if I would miss that wonderful rattle from under the hood...

Good luck - drive several extensively!

I have an 03 3500 dually 4x4 and I am getting 17.5 hwy while not pulling a load. With a heavy load still getting about 12. So if you are pulling often, go with the diesel.
