LOUD squeaking on shut-off

when i shut my truck off, i get a loud squeal/squeak from under the hood...

I have some black oil on my belts from a while back but it seems to be dry, so this may be it..

could it be anything else?

its pretty loud and embarassing, so hopefully its something with a quick fix!

Is your truck an auto? Because of the high compression of these engines, when you shut them down, they stop spinning pretty quick. Some of the accessories have inertia to keep going a bit, and you get the squeek. Its more noticable on the autos as they don't have the mass of the flywheel to slow down.

The squeak on shut-down once in awhile is normal for the Cummins.

goodyear makes a belt called gatorback belt, it stops the squeak.
it cost about $25.00 i think. i have one and love it, no more squeak.
got it from advance autoparts, napa also sells it.

okay, yeah i didnt know if it was normal or not. It does it every time on shut-down.
and yeah it's an auto...

I'll check out that belt and see if that stops it,

is there anything else I can do to tone it down a little? or should I just leave it be?

thanks for all the info guys

haha well now that I know it's the cummins power that's causing the squeek, i know it's something to be proud of...

I sure do get a LOT of looks in parking lots tho.

How 'bout you get a gasoline engine for your truck to cut down on the smoke and clatter as well?

why would i do that when i love blowing beautiful black smoke and i m the only cummins in my apt complex, i love waking people up, oh and what about pulling up on side of people while chatting on their cellphone and them try to get away .
as a matter of fact, i didnt care about the shut off squeak, it would squeak while running from degreasing the engine too much. no matter how much belt dressing i would put, it would squeak till it warmed up, which sounds cheap and tacky to me.
by the way i despise gasoline.nuttin but cummins in my family.

You have to first release the belt tensioner. You use a 3/8" socket wrench (with no socket on it) or a 3/8" inch breaker bar. Insert that into the square hole on the tensioner and rotate it to release the tension on the belt. Now you can remove the belt.

While the belt is off I highly reccomend you use some emory cloth or very fine sandpaper and rub all the pulleys. On the ribbed pulleys get in the channels with the emory or sandpaper. The point of doing that is that the only thing that drives your pulleys is friction. As belts get older they tend to slip a little more and more. As belts slip they have a polishing effect on the pulleys (called glazing). Roughing them up will restore the surface and give the belt a much better surface to grab onto as it rotates.

Here is a picture I just took. I highlighted where the tensioner is (green arrow). It sits between the alternator and the A/C compressor.

NO intentions to Hi-jack here, but my 06 squeaked when new but now it doesn't any more after 600 miles. I have changed nothing except the intake. Truck runs better than ever, but it just won't squeak. I miss it. How do I get it back!?
