lil diesel engines, for international scout
well, a pal of mine has a hand me down international scout, nothing to yell about by no means, fact of the mater is it has a very very straight body and patch panels have already been installed on the floor boards, glass is all there all it needs is to be wired and painted(primered in his case) and have and engine/ trans put in, now thats the part i was wondering if some of yall could chime in on, maybe a good 4 cylinder diesel, doesnt have to be a turbo'd diesel or a cummins, what sorta trans combination would be good? the vehicle is just going to be used at his deer lease, nothing complex just a simple straight forward easy to work on engine/ trans combo.

The diesel used by IHC in the Scout II's was not an Isuzu diesel... it was a Nissan inline 6-cyl diesel. Not sure, but I think it was the same one found in the Nissan Patrol. The first few years of the diesel option in the Scout II was a N/A diesel that had trouble getting out of its own way. The last year SII's were produced, 1980, the Nissan diesel got a turbo.
The IHC SV (266, 304, 345 8-cly gas engines) used in the SII's weigh in at **** near 750 lbs. The Cummins 4BT/4BTA weighs in at about 725 lbs., so weigh wise it would be a good match that wouldn't require beefing to the suspension to hold the weight of the Cummins. However, the 4BT is quite a bit taller than the IHC SV's and would more than likely require a spring-over-axle lift on the SII to provide necessary clearance between the oil pan and the front axle.
Now, all this info applys to the Scout II (1972-1980) since that was the only model that ever had a factory installed diesel (the Nissan 6-cyl mentioned above). The engine bay of the Scout 80/800 (1961-1971) is considerably smaller. Most of the 80/800's came with a 4-cyl and just putting a V8 in them requires significant mods to the firewall, etc. just to shoe horn it in. Some of the 800's came with a factory installed V8, but they have a differently configured firewall from the factory to clear the V8.
What year Scout (or Scout II) does he have?

in a drunken conversation i had with my pal about his scout, it doesnt have any sort of papers, thats y its just gonna stay on the deer lease, but he seems to think its a 68, or hes been told it was a 68, i guess if we really wanted to find out we could trace the vin#. Some one told him that Frito Lay delivery truck/vans have 3cylinder diesels and he wanted to look into one, anyone ever heard of such an animal? or is it a bunch b.s.?

The coupe in my gallery is running one of the engines. There is a place in CA. to buy the fresh overhauled Nissian engine in question. It is an alright engine. They inline (P7100) type pump. In that vehicle it is getting about 26 MPG and is 3800#.
