Liberty Diesel Mileage

Anybody with a Diesel Liberty in here?? i know a few had talked about them, but I wanted to hear what kind of mileage there getting in real world. I saw in consumer reports they tested one with the diesel and they were only seeing around 18 mpg. I find it hard that with the 5.9 liter and mods were (I'm) getting around 16-17 on the high way and that a much smaller diesel is only doing 18?? I was thinking about going diesel due to the economy, but if the gas engine is doing around 20, and gas is cheeper, why not go that route? Any insite would def. be appreciated.

I wouldn't trust consumer reports for any reliable and accurate info regarding trucks or suv's. They are extremely biased towards cars. In fact, I have never picked up a copy that tested trucks where they didn't whine about the fact the trucks tested didn't drive like a car.

That's why I figured I'd ask the guys on here. I know how they rated the dodge turck too, "shifted to hard, was loud, and the suspension felt like it was on bricks" it's like welcome to what it's like to ride in a real truck, not a cadilack. I'm looking at buying one, but if the milage numbers are the same, I'm gonna go gas. Already have a diesel to pull the trailer, and up in the cold I def. like the fast warm up of the gasers. my old S-10, 100 feet and it was warm. I miss that little truck. And the 35 MPG too

I don't own one but spoke to an owner at the diesel pump. He said it was getting about 17MPG average around town and 26+ on the highway.

what brand motor are those running? im assuming if its a option you could get a higher gear ratio. They probably use a low gear ratio standard to increase selling point for towing.

I've had my liberty for four weeks now putting 1000 miles a week on it. I have been geeting combined 25mpg. On the high way it gets over 27 but I spend alot of time in 4 wheel low . Over all I have been real happy with the jeep and plan on keeping it till my company tells me I have to by a new one.

Doesn't seem like that great of mileage considering vehicles in the same class with gas engines are getting the same mileage.

What vehicles are in the same class as the Liberty and get 27 mpg? Do they have a 5000 pound towing capacity?

I have an '06 liberty CRD sport, and do about 22-23 combined depending on if i keep it under 70 on the hwy. I try to keep the rev's around 2000 when crusing and that helps, if i go with traffic the mileage goes down, otherwise it has been great no issues at all, I also run stnadyne in it which has helped.

My wife has an 05 that is one of the first one's made. She has a HEAVY right foot and has never got worse than 21mpg. Once it got as good as 26mpg. She has had gas Grand Cherokee's and gas Liberty's and has never gotten more than 17-18 mpg out of them.

Yes but you have a 96 model that is mechanically injected. Not a Electronically controlled engine with so much pollution junk on it you can barely see the engine! Drove one of our 06' dually's all weekend empty and drove like a grandpa at speeds of 60mph and less and all I could squeeze out of it was 15.1mpg. Some of our 03 and older one's would do 19-20, some of our old 12-valve's would do over 20. Just the way it is I guess.

I got a CRD because I'm a diesel head. My mother in law has a four cylinder rav 4 that gets 30mpg but it is two wheel drive. Also the liberty has a curb weight of 4033lbs and thats pretty heavy for that small of a car. Unlike its import cousins their is no aluminum (sorry for the spelling) in the suspension. It is all cast Iron. Dana axel in the front and chrysler 8.25 in the rear. also if im not mistaken it has a 3.73 ratio. It is built like a jeep and has really taken me by suprise. Chrysler offers that same motor in the minivans across the pond and it gets 45 mpg on the highway. My wifes only get 20 if were lucky. Sorry for the long post my friends say I'm long winded.
Also the jeep is rear wheel drive and the other small utes are mostly front wheel drive. If I have stated anything incorectly somone please correct me. I like my jeep but I love my 96 4x4 CTD

It's an Italian engine made by VM Motori, a DC subsidiary.

Emissions equip probably costs 4mpg on this engine.
