Point is, even an '03gasser is better in just about every way than the '74 and really don't pay that much more for it when you adjust for inflation.
What dealership are you pricing at?... cause I want to go there. I never saw one 3/4 ton diesel or gas unit in 03 under 30,000. In three states. In fact thats why I decided on the 5 speed cummins becasue I thought I would get longer service out of the cummins. I was actually looking to stay with the gas unit...

Back at the end of '03 when I was looking for mine, $20k is about what a SL gasser regular cab 4X4 was going for, if you could find one. See, that's the point- we want more truck and are paying for more truck than we did 30 years ago and that's what the manufacturers are turning out- more truck, now to the tune of $60k . I got lucky and paid well under $30k for mine at Hinckley Dodge in SLC, UT (see sig., stickered for $38k), nothing fancy but it suits my needs perfectly- I couldn't be happier.

My buddy bought a new "3rd gen" Quad Cab 1500 4x4 SLT manual with the small V-8 (4.7?) at the end of 2002 for $23k or so. Adjusted for inflation, that's roughtly what he would've paid in the 70's, but his new truck is sure better than anything made in the 70's (just don't try and tow anything with it).

Fast forward to 2007, a stripped 2wd ST stickers for $23k (click for link). Add 4wd and subtract the rebates and you can see that such a truck costs no more today than it did 30 years ago when adjusted for inflation.

ugh

its sickening to know that a company can charge 60,000 for a truck. They will close down eventually if they keep charging that much for a vehicle. I dont like it one bit to pay that much for a new engine with all the kinks in it. I dont care how nice it is. All three of the Michigan automakers really need to get rid of those unions and drop their prices some or else I think the Toyotas and Hondas really will start to eat them up.
