Land Rover Diesel

Anyone out there know about the diesels they put in Land Rovers over in Europe? When the wife and I move to Germany we are thinking about getting a diesel Land Rover. Any help would be appreciated.

When I was in London, almost all vehicles being driven were manual diesel engines, (I'm assuming the vehicles will be similar in Germany)....And all of the Land Rovers I saw over there were using the diesel platform with a manual trans, Alot of the Defender 90 Rover diesels, they do not sell then over here, I am assuming they are using the same platform for the Discovery, Freelander, and the Range Rover.... As to which engine is actually is, I am not sure.
Try going to Land Rovers website and go to the european version of the site and they should have alot more info on the situation.

Don't know about today, but I remember the Land Rover (nicknamed Landies) in Africa. They were barely OK and real dogs, not to mention being an ultra pain to work on.

diesel landy

Have a wander to www.parkers.co.uk follow a couple of links and it'll tell you the various models, engines, prices etc....We tend to go for smaller engines here, usually 2.5 -3ltr....due to the cost of diesel....works out about $7.30 a gallon....OUCH !!!!!!

Hope this is some help.....

jrkern, you did not mention if you intend to bring the LR back to the states. If you are considering this, don't forget to factor in the lack of dealers where you can buy parts. Even in Germany, it may be a problem in some areas, but at least you are not that far from a British parts source.

JRKERNS,
The early rover diesels were nothing to brag about. Starting with the 200TDI they got better. If I had my choice I'd go for the 300TDI motor. It's simple enough to not be failure prone and has fewer electronics than the TD5 which I think was the "new" diesel that came out a year or two back. I've not driven the TD5 but I have driven several of the earlier diesels. I've been really impressed with the 300TDI both on road and off road.

One more link for you, these guys are well known LandRover engine builders/modifiers. I'm sure they could provide plenty of info:

As far as support in the US there are a number of LandRover parts suppliers in the US that can get you most anything you need.

My offroad rig is a LandRover, and my last tow vehicle was also a LandRover. I needed better towing capacity which is why I've got the Dodgenow.

SPUNBEARING, I've been thinking of the same thing cummins 4bt in a series rover. I've got an old '63 109" Station Wagon that needs a new powerplant.

109's are awesome. Mine is a "1972 88" with a fairey overdrive unit. Has the stock 2.25 litre I think that overhaulin should come and get it and call the episode " roverhaulin" lol. I couldn't afford it... they charge you taxes on parts/labor. It would still cost a bundle.

There are also plenty of good Toyota Hilux's and Crusiers' with 4 and 6-cylinder diesels over there. A Crusier with a turbo six and a five-speed would be great!
