John Deere 2940 starting problem

My 2940 does not want to turn over when cold(either summer or winter). When i engage the ignition switch you hear a clunk sound but the motor does not turn over. Leaving the ignition switch on, I can short the selinoid with a screw driver and the motor turns over and starts. Do you think i could have a bad selinoid or starter. Sounds like the clunk noise comes from the selinoid. After it starts it will restart with key about 90% of the time.

My dad use to have one of those tractors. You need a new solenoid
You can get a kit from JD that will destroke your hydrolic pump and will help your tractor start easier.(takes a lot of stress off the starter)
