General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

That scares me..

Back in 1970 I was had a Ford boss 351 I used to race around in, anyway I was in a Ford sponsored racing club and we had a Mutang with a 427 side oiler running in the M/P class and close to 900 hp. We had it on the roller dyno at the dealrship and they only put on 2 chains to restrain it.
They must not have been thinking because in 4th. gear as it was nearing 8000 RPM the M&H slicks expanded as they would as you near 150 MPH and the car left the rollers. It was now like it was shot out of from a catapult on a aircraft carrier, It went through a row of roll away tool boxes, out the back of the garage, through a store room and hit 2 cars in the new car parking lot.
Pat the driver really had a wild ride.
That was a sight I will never forget.

And here in California, if you pulled up along someone at a stop light and filled their car with smoke, they would probably shoot you.
My comment was in reference to being a "criminal" in Kalifornia if your truck smokes-and having a gun in the same state that bans guns for the most rediculous reasons. About the only thing Kalifornia accepts these days are sex changes (paid for by the tax payers) and gays!!

my truck puts out a lil smoke, enough to cover maybe one lane, but not thick enough you cant see thru it. my old man gets on me about my wasted fuel cuz i like to leave a little in front of the house when he is sitting on the porch.

when on the road i really try to control the smoke when others are around, be it cars or pedestrians...one the back country roads going hunting i sometimes purposely bog it to see how much it will blow so yea you can get me on the polluting aspect there. you guys are right tho, i am young, 20 to be exact with a 400 hp diesel truck that smokes. today in town i tunred the corner and saw some guys from a concrete contractor with a huge lifted ford work truck...i got on it, blew smoke, shifted to 3rd, blew some more to show off for them and got all their attention

but then for the first time in the last 8 months this truck has smoked...a woman from across the intersection came up to me when her light turned green, stopped to tell me im blowing black smoke. like i said 99% of the time i ease away from lights and keep rpms up to keep the smoke down. and thats on a non-adjustable full time 70hp box.

I just have a question about what state you live in? There is a town close to me with the same name and they are always makeing stupid laws and blowing thing up that are really no big deal. If its the same town then it figures same town I got a ticket in for haveing a truck with a CAT and no muffler when I first got my truck. cop said it was too loud but the strtaight piped chevy 350 that passed and goosed it (5x's louder) he said nothing about?

Adjust your right foot to control your smoke.

in regards to all the posts:

I think the main point of this thread is that riding around smoking people out on main street is not cool. It can be fun to show off for people who care but I've got a news flash; 99.5% of the people you see through the course of every day AREN"T IMPRESSED by your ability to blow black smoke.
To them, and me you make yourself look like a moron. They see an redneck polluting with a big loud truck. I see wasted money in fuel blowing out your exhaust pipe.

If you drive sensibly in a properly tuned vehicle there are very few situations where billowing smoke is a necessary by-product of driving.

What you do when nobody's around is your own business; If theres nobody to witness you doing it, you won't be written a ticket.

Better yet, if you aren't doing something you KNOW you could be ticketd for, you won't be ticketed for that known offense.

"I guess you chose to ignore the other part of my post?"

I don't know what I missed, sorry.

"It's my truck, not yours. "

Yeah, but you don't own the fishbowl, we all do. Get it ? And if everyone ran around polluting as much as they wanted, we'd all be dead. Get it ? For as much moaning as everyone does about EPA and emissions, the penalty has been very, very small for the DRAMATIC improvement in engine emissions. One could even go so far as to say that once the manufacturers got their acts together engine performance IMPROVED because the stricter emissions regulations required innovation and improvement, which resulted in higher HP engines, better fuel economy, etc. (Please don't post how your 70s muscle car is so much better than today's engines.)

BTW: NOx IS a REAL problem in congested urban areas. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Ask people in California how bad the smog was in the 70s and how much better it is now, INSPITE of a dramatic increase in the number of cars on the road, much higher power levels and people driving way, way more miles than they used to back then.

"I bought the ECM/Injectors to increase HP/TQ. Smoke is a side effect of those mods, period. I can control smoke. I personally, don't blow smoke every chance I get. I took a picture of my truck smoking to show others how a MAD ECM will smoke."

So was it worth it to blow smoke just to get a picture ? Funny you bought the ECM/Injectors BEFORE you bought a bigger turbo. Ya know, if these engine tuners had some pressure put on them about the smoke their setups produced, maybe they would get smarter about NOT increasing the fuel until there was more boost.

Someone innovative could even put an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system and have the ECM run on the verge of smoke (or EGTs for that matter) all the time, thus maximizing the amount of power the engine makes for the air flow without it ever smoking.

"Do I think it cool? Sometimes, but I really could care less in the big picture. What I do think is cool is running 13's or better in the qtr mile."

Why don't you buy a motorcycle. A lot cheaper/faster/funner. Why do you bother to drag race a truck ? I know, because you can.

"That's my goal. If any of you would like to pay for and put fuel in my truck, I would gladly drive it the way you would like me too."

No you wouldn't ! If your fuel was free you would just make more smoke.

"Just as I wouldn't live in a neighborhood where someone is going to tell me what kind of mailbox I can have or not have. I won't listen to someone tell me if my truck should or shouldn't blow smoke, even if I hated smoking trucks in the first place."

Unfortunately, or fortunately, you don't have the RIGHT to drive your truck any way you want. DRIVING a vehicle is a privilege, not a RIGHT. You don't have the RIGHT to pollute the environment any which way you want. You do have the privilege of using a vehicle in a responsible manner, according to state laws. Thus far you've gotten away with gross pollution, but some day you will get caught and you'll get ticketed and shut down. The way it should be.

"It's almost like living in a Socialist country! SEE MY POINT."

No, it isn't like living in a Socialist country, it is living in a democracy. Democracies have RULES to protect the good of the community. What if we had no rules about dumping toxic waste into a river ? Would you sit there quietly while Exxon dumped waste into the Mississippi ? No, you'd scream bloody murder. And authorities would do something about it and rightly so.

"If you want to go after someone, put pressure on the aftermarket manufactures to build big power with no smoke."

I am actually SHOCKED that nobody in EPA does anything about the aftermarket tampering that goes on. It is an absolute joke the way people mod these engines and yet not get fined. I've got nothing against a clean mod, but nobody has any incentive to make something clean when they sell the volume of dirty crap they do.

"If any of you "experts" have a way to make 400-500 hp without smoke, bring it to the market! I've yet to see it, but maybe I can't for the smoke..."

Why are you blaming them. You bought the thing. Do you really need 400-500HP ? For what ? To go fast at the dragstrip ? In a 7000 pound truck ? Doesn't make sense.

"I see a lot of reverse transference going on with some of these replys. SPS and "your manly". That's a good way to win a debate, really it is. I feel threatened."

If it ain't to prove your manliness, then tell us why you just had to put injectors and an ECM into your truck ? It wasn't fast enough as stock ? There was a hill that you couldn't pull your trailer up ?
