Around here the law is written, any visible smoke for more than 5 seconds is illegal. That goes for any vehicle on the public roadways. Five seconds is more than plenty of time to get the snap throttle smoke out and turbo boost up. It's also against federal law to tamper with emissions equipment. Factory tuned fuel injection for acceptable exhaust emissions is emissions equipment. Increasing fuel delivery beyond factory settings and exceeding opacity limits can bring fines in the thousands for tampering with emissions equipment. Be glad your little redneck sheriff just wants to give you an equipment and moving violation ticket. Sounds like they're either ignorant or giving you a break. I'd rather see the full federal fines to the maximum brought on you for blowing a black cloud of childishness in my face. Hope the next guy you do that to isn't a federal judge in his car.
I remember city buses when I was little in the early '60's. The huge black cloud of smoke wasn't cool. It stunk like crazy. I also remember gas engines with their chokes on in winter. The stench was horrible. I wouldn't want to go back to those days. My hat's off to the EPA and emissions standards.
Here in Florida you'll lose your vehicle for drag racing too. And spectators are arrested.
I've owned four Cummins powered Rams and will likely own another in the next couple of years. Mine didn't smoke and my new one won't either.

Didnt smoke huh? Ill bet it did. My uncle has a BONE DEAD STOCK 98.5 24 valve that will shoot a decent puff every time he starts it. ANY diesel will smoke. There is just no way around it.

And what exactly do you gain my blowing smoke ? That is the part that I just don't understand. Do you make more power when the diesel fuel doesn't burn properly IN the combustion chamber ? Does it save fuel ? No on both counts.
The only justification that I can come up with for people who want to blow smoke is that it looks cool. It makes them feel manly. It's like when we were 8 and we put cards in our bicycle wheels so that our bicycles sounded like motorcycles. I guess some people want their trucks to smoke "like a real truck". Well, guess what. Real trucks don't smoke any more. When I see a big rig smoking, I wonder why the driver doesn't get the engine fixed.
And one more thing. I've heard the argument "they aren't running clean, so why should I ?" several times. It goes back to the fishbowl thing. There is only one and we share it. It is in our best interest to take care of it. And besides, maybe someone else is saying that he won't clean up his emissions because he sees YOU smoking.
I'm happy to see that we can have a sane discussion about this topic.

If you want to go after someone, put pressure on the aftermarket manufactures to build big power with no smoke. If any of you "experts" have a way to make 400-500 hp without smoke, bring it to the market! I've yet to see it, but maybe I can't for the smoke...
I see a lot of reverse transference going on with some of these replys. SPS and "your manly". That's a good way to win a debate, really it is. I feel threatened.
Maybe some of you have read too much Thomas The Tank Engine!

This picture has me freaked out! Am i seeing it right that a chain attached to the trailer hitch is the ONLY thing holding that truck in place???
Last dyno I was at, they used 4 straps minimum to the axles! (OK, the big Hp guys got 6 total)
That scares me..

and the only reason the big companies have smoke belching out their trucks is the fact they cannot force (at the moment) anymore air into the combustion chamber. yes, they have fuel but if they had more air to that exact same amount of fuel they would have more power. it just so happens more fuel is easier to achieve than more air. how does the turbo aftermarket survive if fuel was the only thing developing this power?
grant you, there may be a special ratio of fuel/air they run to keep the combustion temps higher. why higher temps? to increase the enthaply difference across the turbos so they convert more heat energy to mechanical energy in terms of boost (and hopefully if the turbos are within map, more air). i still feel the amount of smoke they create is too much and they could use more air. triple turbos will be normal at some point, but how do you hold the head down and not blow gaskets? maybe thats the limiting factor with our sized engine as to why more air hasnt been achieved yet.
time will tell...

rather, its a way for the cops to pull over a "known" polluting BOMBed diesel truck without having to see the heavy, thick soot. the cops know who the culprits are, this law enables them to have a legitimate way to pull them over. more power to them...

I don't understand all the hubub here, I think most all of us have the ability to adjust our mods to control smoke, do you really need all the the extra power just to run around town. I don't push near the HP as some of you but with the Comp Drag and RV 275 Injectors I can adjust smoke accordingly and not lose anything I could ever want to play with on the street. I luv the smoke but right time , right place. I luv to shoot guns to but living in town I don't go out the front door and do that.

A 12valve isn't the same. I cant hit the ol comp box switch. Mine is adjusted the way i want and i have no problems with it. Iv'e bumped the timing which got rid of alot of low end smoke but not all of it. I am still on the stock charger so it spools pretty quick.

I keep seeing posts by people who say that smoke is a side effect of power. True. "Haisley and Scheid do it, why can't I?" They're on a track. If that same truck is idling through town ( though I doubt they're very streetable at the power level they're at) I don't think they'd blow volcanic ash every time they hit the gas any amount. I bet even they don't chug the coal going up to the line. It IS controllable. I have 370's, a 100 plate, afc full forward and the starwheel cranked and I don't have to leave a cloud everytime I roll off a stop sign. I can. But I don't. It's a power play. Like I said, you do what you want, but the more you blatently blow smoke in town or in a crowded area, the more reason the police have to come after ANY truck that smokes even a little. Just like cruising a drag car on the street. It CAN go 120mph in 10 seconds,,,but should you on a public street? It's up to us. We can act like teenagers and flaunt what we got, while we're allowed to have it. Or we can be semi-responsible adults and use some common sense and keep the laws off our back.

No I am not and yes I sure do, quite a few of them.
Once you have had a NDE your whole attitude for life changes and you will do whatever it takes to preserve that.
I can honestly say that I have not even been pulled over in the last 15 years of driving. I have a Class1 CDL with endorsements and that has been renewed by mail 4 times already. All I have to do is have a physical every 2 years, so I must be doing something right.
