I maintain a fleet of trucks for a big customer. Despite receiving training 3 weeks ago, one of my expert technicians double o-ringed an oil filter on a Cummins ISX. it made it about 200 miles, while the truck was idling and the driver sleeping the filter let go and dumped 11 gallons of oil.

how long will an ISX run before shutting itself down after losing oil pressure? I know an N14 will run up to a minute after the engine stop light comes on and usually locks up. the ISX took 11 gallons of new oil, removed the extra o-ring and fired right up, I am concerned with the possibility of spun bearings or other internal damage due to lack of lubrication. would you drop the pan or not?

What stopped the engine to begin with? Sure, it lost all the oil, but is there a low oil pressure cutoff that shut it down or did it lock up from no lube?

shut down automatically when it lost oil pressure.

got it all taken care of, freaking out earlier. going to pull the pan just incase.

Using Insite (If you have it) pull up the Audit Trail and then go to engine abuse history. From there, you can see how long the engine was run with low oil pressure, low coolant temp, high intake temp etc. . I am betting 30 sec before shutdown.

Yeah it's usually between 30-60 seconds. Where I work we run road calls and get the occasional oil or coolant leak/ engine shutdown. I'm surprised it lost that much oil actually. A lot of times they shut down after losing about 2 gal. But thats also while driving. I haven't come across an oil leak while idling yet, oil pressure is lower at idle so it probably didn't sense a leak.
