I had a Scout II gasser, wish I would have never sold it. If you can get for a decent price do it by all means, you woun't regret it for a play toy. Good luck with it.

My old man has a 1980 International Scout one of the last one ever made. It had a nessian diesel engine in it. He burned it up by pushing to hard. He had a 3.4L cummins put into it. I am haivng trouble attaching the pictures at the moment but you can find them here. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=146761

Hope this helps. Rob

Best info I can give you is to register and search on the Binder Bulletin.

There are several fixes for the 'draft tube' leaking oil. Again, gotta search. Very dependable little engines. They also used these engines in a variety of other applications like forklifts. I have ordered parts for mine through the local forklift dealer without a problem.

Good luck. You will have many questions--especially when it gets cold out!

I don't think it's gotta be cold, it don't start real good now. It does have a weak battery which kills cranking speed. Right now it's just sitting, I'm working alot of hours and it's only going to get worse till the first of the year. I thought it was a regular scout but it's a traveler which looks longer than a regular old scout.

You can convert the Traveler 'hatch back' style into a Terra pickup by purchasing a different top and Scout tailgate. You can also modify the hatchback by cutting the hatchback and bolting on a Scout tailgate, thereby making it a longer Scout. I never did like the Travelers much because of the goofy top, but there is a solution.

In fourwheeler magazine in 1980, they declared all the diesel scout was good for was pulling bulldozers out of bogs...

Everyone has an opinion. I've ran everything from stock four cylinder rides to wild roller cam motors. It will probably be a slug but it's my slug!

The Diesel Scout really shines when in low range off roading. It rock crawls just fine, but don't expect to go mud bogging with it.

My family uses are little scout (3.4L I6 Cummins) to pull stumps and get into tight places when cutting wood and for just general small odd job work around the place.

It really does shine in 4L throw a chain and start tugging.

You probably want to get a Pyromiter/EGT on it pretty quick because thats what cooked the original nissan engine in it.

I had a buddy in HS with an 80 with a 14" lift and Dick Cepek Fun Country's on it. I thought it was an Isuzu diesel, though. It was light gray with that orange and brown stripe and had the square type headlights.
He used to take it to Tijuana and fill it up and a 50 gallon auxillary tank for less than 20 bucks and drive it all month long!
It was a one of a kind for sure. Have fun with it.

Kurt
