International I6 motor

International I6 motor
I used to be in the Air National Guard, and one of our 5 ton tractors had a 5.9 International motor. It was turbo charged. I think the truck was a mid 80's (maybe an 87?). Also, I think it was rated at 185hp. I haven't been around that tractor in awhile, and I don't know if the unit still has it. I'll try to get down there soon and look at it again.
Anyways, that tractor was used to tow a 40' trailer with a lot cargo, and it did fine. Anyone have knowledge on IH inline diesel motors? I wonder why Ford did not use it? I don't remember it being any bigger than a 5.9 Cummins. And yes, it was an INTERNATIONAL 5.9 turbo charged diesel motor.

yes it was. the DT360 IH truck engine. Wonderful piece of work, and like its inbred cousin, the DT466, they just run forever, with routine maintenance.
I have seen and run many of the IH engines in vocational trucks and buses, and can say that they are reliable as sunrise. They don't make brute power necessarily, but they make steady pulling power when run properly.
I have seen these with both P-style and VE style pump setups. both are great runners.
If you have one, have fun with it, if not, I can say for sure, that they were cheaper to buy than the "big 3" engines, and cheaper to maintain / get parts for.

Never seen a VE on one. Model 100 is the distrubtor pump they used on them. The may have also used the A pump.

Ford had many medium duty diesels they could have used that are every bit as good as the Cummins and would have given them a lot better service some they even own like the Ford Dorset Diesel . Instead they go with a light duty and hope the sheep keep following blindly . Chevy has done the same thing for years , the whole thing does not make much sense in my book .

My dad has one of those dt360's in his dump truck and its been a good engine, not a lot of power but pretty reliable. He had to do a rebuild about 6 years ago as the orings in the wet sleeves started leaking. The nice thing about them is they are sleeved so you can do a full inframe on them. Then about 2 weeks ago he lost a injector which started full streaming and put a pin hole in the piston. Never seen that before!! I haven't looked at it or compared it to a 6b but I would say that it is physically larger. I don't think it would fit in a pickup without a lot of massaging.
