Installing a Cummins into a Chevy
#32
I think if you are going too do a conversion you should run a first gen, Just it dosen't take much wiring to get it running. And now a days they are becoming easy to get a hold of them. You can pic one up for around 1,500.

If anyone has any 12v's let me know, We have another chevy that needs one and i also want to put one in my ramcharger. I would also like a 5sp and tranfer case for the Ramcharger.

I'm seriously considering selling my truck and finding a nice 95+ Suburban 2500 4x4. More than anything, I want 4 wheel drive...and having a big brute SUV would be choice for me. I'd like to find one with a 350 for mileage...but might settle on a 454 if it's the "right" truck.
Eventually, I'd like to swap in a 12V P-Pumped Cummins. I'm concerned about what trans to use. I'd like an Auto OD, just for comfort, and I don't think I'd BOMB the motor other than maybe a BHAF and exhaust, so I think a stock trans ought to hold up.
I've been poking around the net looking for detailed information on a CTD swap into a C/K Chevrolet/GMC, but can't find anything.
I'd like to know what it takes as far as driveshaft/yoke, motor mounts, trans mounts, transfer case, wiring....A/C and charging system....any fabrication mods like frame notching or something....
I'd like to purchase a Suburban in the next few months and then begin to eventually purchase the parts required to complete the swap as funds allow....it'd sure be nice to know what I need before trying to tackle the project blindfolded.

an automatic tranny from a gas application will suck beind a diesel because the shift points will be all wrong...
where a gasser tranny will want to shift at 3500rpm at WOT, you'll be wishing it it would shift at 2900...
HUGE difference...
auto trannies are the devil

if you find a Surban with a 4L80 e you can use that trannie and transfer case. You can get a stand alone trannie controller, Its very easy to program, and you can customize the way you want it to shift, when and how hard, and when you want it to go into lockup. If you use the GM trannie then you don't have to worry about mounting probs of the trannie, You will prob have to slide it back a little. We have used this trannie hauling cars last trip over the scales was 27.500lbs, so it will hold up, with little mods. We used the GM altornator and AC, and didn't have to mod the frame any.

I think a Dana 60 would be necessary unless you run stock tires, and somehow manage to have the engine placed far back to relieve the weight on the front end. I was looking at the specs on a 3500 3rd gen Cummins, front axle carries 4600lbs unloaded, so I'd really take that into consederation. If the dana 44 can handle 4500lbs then okay, if not Then I'd go with a dana 60.
Theres a guy on the turbodiesel register forum in the conversion section that is converting a 454 chevy suburban to a cummins powered but hes going all out to the looks of it. Totally fabricated a new header for the turbo and made pretty stout mounts and exhaust. I'd check it out b/c its pretty interesting, not done yet though.

I never thought about the sheer weight sitting on the axles/bearings/etc... I was just thinking about the strength of the axles when 4wd is engaged... I figured if I took it easy in 4wd, the D44 would hold up, but yeah, I never thought about the WEIGHT sitting on it!

I talked with a friend who knows his stuff, and he agreed with me on the 4L80E Auto Trans with a stand-alone controller (I think JET or TCI makes them).
I found a gorgeous '98 2500 Suburban 4x4 with a 454 and 4L80E. I think I'll run by there on Monday and see if I can talk them into a trade for my '92 and some cash. I've been envying every 4x4 on the road, and for some reason just want a huge SUV, but Cummins 6BT powered so I think this one might just fit the bill.
