I really dont think the 7.3 is as bad as some people make you think it is..... the 6.0 is a completely different story..... you couldnt give me a 6.0, but the 7.3 runs quite well..... it wont tow quite like a 5.9 ctd, but it is at least somewhat durable....... and the fords are rather roomy and comfortable too......

Just my $0.019

Matt - how about a jetta, golf, beetle, or passat TDI diesel? Maybe it's just me, but it seems far more socially and financially responsible to drive something smaller and more economical when you don't NEED a truck or suv.. I had an 02 jetta tdi and it was a fantastic car...no problems in 62k averaging 47mpg driving the crap out of it.. Wish I kept that car instead of my mb diesel.

Matt, you might be in luck! The 2007 Dodge Caliber coming out could be the ticket for a replacement for your ailing Jeep. Sounds lke there might be a 2.0L TDI diesel option as well in the U.S.: http://cars.about.com/od/dodg1/fr/ch_07caliber.htm

I went over to the Jeep site and looked at those new Liberty's with the diesel. Common Rail fuel system and a TurboCharger. Looks like a real powerful beast. I wonder what kind of maintenance issues the engine will have? Anyone have any idea what kind of MPG's they get? Also how durable is that Italian made engine?

Edwin
Bought the wife one in Sep. 05 and it's one sweet little ride! Lots of power and gets around 25 to 27 MPG. Only issue we had with it so far is the EGR replaced (TSB) at 8k. We have 15k so far and no issues what so ever.

I thought I read, since we now have a Mega Cab, a full size SUV is possible.
Cummins is the only way to go there. Think it was AllPar that talked about that.

Wow, sounds like your having a time with that Grand Cherokee...We have 2 of em 96 Lifted, and a 02 Overland. The 02 has'nt gave us any problems in its 70,000 miles.

Maybe you got one that was built on a monday morning?

Well I went to New York saturday to pick up the Excursion. I was realy dreding it a first but turned out ok. It's A 2003 with the 7.3 and its only got 30,000 miles on it. It gets prety good mpg, I put 9 gal in and it got me home which is about 250 miles south and had plenty to spare. The wife is mad at me for already looking for A Cummins to stick in it. I just keep telling her that I'm just getting prepared for when it blows up, I guess I a little time till I have to worry about it. O the Hummer idea I great when I find a spare 50 grand laying around.

Matt;

When you fill that thing up you see you had much more fuel in there than you thought. Most of the those 7.3 get anywhere between 15 and 19 mpg depending on the speed you drive them. My son-in-law has one. The tank falls off real quick and then last forever once below 1/2.

I've always had large vehicles and really wanted an Excursion when they first came out. When it was time to replace my wifes car, I thought it would be a good time to get one. My wife said it was to big. Almost, she wanted the Durango. When I ride in my son-in-laws now I think of how nice it would have been on a long trip when we did not have the fiver in tow with the truck.

I saw one with twin DVD screens on the rear of the back seats with kids in the back. They were having a good time.

I had a 7.3 in a 93 crew cab dually. Except for running really dirty in the oil pan, it ran pretty good. Not as good as the cummins. When I sold it I had 168K on it and the last time I saw it, it had 285K on it. I could see the engine in the 93, thats almost impossible in the one you have.

Have fun with it. I would be curious what mileage you get with it after you've driven for a while. Run to Ocean City and back for some French Fries or something.

I heard that the cherokee was going to get a diesel option in 07. I am hoping that the durango will get one too. My truck will be paid off this year and the wife wants a durango.

I've got almost 20,000 miles on my Jeep turbo-diesel now. I pulled 5,700 lbs. with it last weekend and got 14 miles per gallon. Running empty it'll do 26 mpg on the highway in the summer. I've had zero mechanical issues with engine or tranny and I've worked mine pretty hard on and off road. I'm 6'4" and drive mine everyday. You should see the looks I get when I pull into a Flying J with a 16' flatbed and pull up to the diesel pumps. For a daily driver/off-road toy/light-duty workhorse you simply cannot beat this thing.

Think how stupid I'll feel when I always get in on the wrong side.
