Re:I gotta crow a bit about my F-350...

Actually since 1989, with a short little fling with a 35+ mpg Toyota Corolla.

A 1988 F-150SC LWB 250-6 and 5 speed, a 1979 F-150 that hogged gas like no tomorrow, a 1989 F-150RC SWB, a 1992 F-150SC SWB, and then this F-350.

I heard some sorta scary things from a man I trust a lot. He says if I'm going to get a Cummins, I should be prepared to work on it a lot. He says valve adjustment every 20k, fuel rail once a year, and other stuff like that.

He says my Non Turbo 7.3 is about as stone reliable as it gets.

Sigh. ???

Re:I gotta crow a bit about my F-350...

I put a lot of miles on my 6.9 and 7.3 fords if this dodge is half as reliable as my old fords are I will be happy actually I bought a cummins it just came wrapped in a dodge. Turbo that 7.3 with the banks waistgated turbo and you will not recognize the truck I had an 86 with a 7.3 and a bae turbo and so far this cummins would not touch it hopefully with a few more mods it will but my trans will be my limiting factor the ford c6 could take anything you could throw at it and maybe this dodge will also we will see

Re:I gotta crow a bit about my F-350...

Unfortunately while you had a pretty much bullet proof C-6, I have a definetly NOT bullet proof E4OD.

It's funny. Eric (the Guy I referred to in the above post) and I were talking today. We agreeded that the old standbys C-6, 400, and 727 3-speed autos were the stuff. We also talked of aftermarket overdrive units so you could use one.

Okay, but then I'd have to come up with a C-6, and the bucks to buy an overdrive, (or to buy a killer E4OD by one of the good tranny guys) and the bucks to buy a turbo kit (which Eric is SQUARLY against!) so I could have something reasonably good.

But I rode 2700 miles recently in my buddies 2001 Ram. I think I'd rather do the least I can get away with on this truck, and try to find me a 1998 Quad Cab LWB in 6 to 8 months. And of course to avoid similar tranny he77, I will be looking for a 5 speed.

Incidently I told my buddy with 1991 and 2001 Rams about what Eric said. Keiths 1991 12v has 325,000 or so and he's never been under the valve cover. He's never had a pump failure either. And 1 tranny in all those miles at around 90,000 on the first one. His 2001 has already eaten a pump, but I don't know if lift pump or injection pump. I think it was injection.

I still have a lot of reading and question asking to do!

But don't let anyone fool you, an IDI Ford (7.3) or the 6.5 Chev share the same injection pump that is good for between 70,000 and 100,000 before the fibre washers wear out and a rebuild is necessary.

You were fooled the fiber washers wer one some of the first pumps built and were updated in later years I am not bashing dodge I own one but to say the fords are no good is BS I owned them and put a lot of miles on them and the same pumps you claim wear out can and will go way beyond 100,000 I have owned five of them and they were all great trucks and engines!

Re:I gotta crow a bit about my F-350...

Ref. the guy telling you you'll be working on the Cummins a lot more - most mechanics, including mine, will tell you that the Cummins is more economical to operate. I have 105K on mine and to date I have changed the oil sensor at 70K and I had to change a piston (#6) at a little over 100K. Nobody has been able to tell me why the piston got cooked, but the suspect is the injector. (See "Burnt Piston" under 2nd Generation Drivetrain) Just completed a trip to Fallon, NV hauling my '53 dropdeck and she ran great - and fast. Oh, and if you're going to do any hauling, get a 6-speed; the spacing RPM wise is perfecto. 5 & 6 is the same as 4 & 5 on the 5-speed. #4 on the 6-speed gives you the in between gear you occasionally need on a heavy haul up a steep grade. Or you can get a spltter for the 5-speed.

Valve adjustments every 20k, tell that guy who told you that to pull his head out of his backside. Fuel rail? The Cummins didn't even have common rail injection until the 03' model year. The Cummins is the most die-hard tough engine out there.

Re:I gotta crow a bit about my F-350...

Thank you very much SFtopSGT!

The ribbing I expected. Most are quite civil about my Ferd. You are exceptional!

I did mpg on my most recent fill up. OUCH! 12.90mpg and about 75% of that tank was with working TC. Truck runs great for how old it seems.

I just pulled the damm visor that some idiot had put on. I figure to gain something in aerodynamics.

I'll have my CTD someday. Might be anywhere from a 1998 back to a 1994, but I want a 12V, and I would REALLY like a Quad Cab. That kinda points to a 1998. Someday.

I have replaced too many of them. Usually they keep running at reduced performance until finally they are changed. When the 6.9 came out they revolutionized Hot Shot trucking. They are a great engine that progress has put in second slot. We have an ambulance here that has near 300,000 and is driven like this: The pager goes off in the winter, the medic runs to the fire house, jumps in the ambulance, fires it off in the 40 degree garage temperatures, puts the throttle on the floor and runs the hell out of it to the call. No warm up, no care, just jump in and floor it. That is a good engine. That being said, I have changed many pumps on IDI and chev, they are a PITA. The Ford also like to blow head gaskets. They also are almost impossible to keep glow plugs in when used heavily. And my Dodge has a lift pump that is junk, but that is reality, not trashing the engines. When the 6.9 came out, they made a new revolution in Hot Shot trucking.
