There are alot of people that had no problems with the 53 block, they just fail quicker once they start being mod.
check to see if you have 1

Nope, mostly '98-'01 with a few '97s

Also you need to check for codes by either using a scanner or doing the on-off key trick. I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage but know that the motor will still be running when the rest of the truck is completely worn out.

Well i change the fuel filter, and oil and check the fuel pressure. It had 9lb on idle and 6 to 7lb at wot so the lift pump must still be working.... Im still going to change it asap because if its the round canister looking thing above the starter with a wire plug going to the bottom of it, it looked like the original part! The sticker on the side of the head says 53040 so i guess that makes it a 53" block... Havent looked at the casting numbers yet to see exactly which block it is but did walk back out after looking through all the crack repair pics and mine doesnt appear to of ever leaked in the past... A guy quoted me today $800 for the lift pump conversion into the fuel tank. Is there a good aftermarket lift pump i can install besides doing that? Thank you all for helping me out here! I really appreciate it!!! Also when i did the fuel pressure check i saw two black screw on caps on the drivers side of the engine, one right directly behind the fuel filter pointing towards the firewall and the other was towards the front of the motor under a black cover at which im assuming is covering the injection pump and that fitting was coming out of the center of a round end of a fuel line pointing to the drivers inner fender, and thats the one i hooked up to the pressure guage. Hopefully thats the right one. Thanks again guys for helping me with this!

You can put a Fass DDRPII and move it to the frame rail with a Vulcan Big line kit for a lot cheaper and if it goes bad you can change it in 30m vs dropping the tank. I'm running 19psi at idle and 15 at WOT with the DDRPII.I ordered mine from the DTR store...great customer service and priced right.

UPDATE: I ended up going with the FASS Titanium fuel pump and all has been well besides i have a fuel tank leak somewhere and can seem the find it.... Also my pump has always been around 17 to 18 pounds. Now all of sudden for last 3 to 4 days its been right around 25lbs... Can someone maybe explain to me why its doing this? Dont think its suppose to be doing this and i wouldnt think the filters would be dirty yet being ive only put a thousand miles on the new pump so far.... Any input would be much appreciated Tony

Welder - you will get soo much good help from the folks on this board. 8 months ago I could barely spell diesel, now I actually think I have a pretty good understanding of how my truck works and I have started down the 'common upgrade' path. Come on over to the 2nd gen and 24 valve fora for specfic help.
