Re:Hummer H1 Diesel?

The 6.2 / 6.5 looks to me to be based on the big-block Pontiac, though Chevy guys seem to get really testy when you point out the similarities, they scream and holler that it was built by Detroit Diesel (a load of male cow dung, it was made by GM powertrain division). The dead give-away on gasser based diesels is the vacuum pump mounted on a dummy distributor. Clean sheet designs don't need a kludge like that to drive the oil pump. That said, here's what I told a friend who bought a diesel Suburban to haul his kids and a little pop-up around - "If it's good enough for the U.S. military, it's good enough for you."

Cool, I was wondering when someone was going to mention the moggie. That's a cool ride, not to far up there in the looks category but tough.

Hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My wife actually likes the looks...sort of a full size Tonka toy. And it has a real diesel engine. You know an I6 like God intended.

If you are talkin European off road vehicles, you can't forget the Pinzer (dont know how to even come close to the full spelling).

They have the same portal style axles, but you can get them in 4x4, 6x6, and I think even 8x8. ;D

The Pinzgauer is a great vehicle. I've had two, a 4x4 softtop and a 4x4 hardtop. Both were gassers because that is all you can import currently due to age restrictions the Feds put on what you can bring in (1986 they switched to turbo 5 and 6 cyl VW diesels).

The Pinz is has a robust design and rides real smooth off road because of the full independent swing arm suspension. Some days I regret getting rid of the softtop Pinz. It weighed about 4000 lb versus my current 7500lb Mog. However, it did justify the purchase of my CTD. ;D

I read an article in Four Wheeler mag a while back that was titled "Moggies at Moab". They put them through some real workouts and as best I remember, they came through every time. Wonder what they are cost wise?

Re:Hummer H1 Diesel?

There were no 8X8 Pinzgauers in production. Several people made some homebrewn prototypes.
The Diesel Pinzgauer was not as good as the gaser- it had an VW LT 35 engine in it that did not have the powerband and that had to be detuned to make the tranny live. If you were going for gas mileage you wouldn't be driving this stuff ;D

AlpineRAM
