Im currently doing this just about 7 steps ahead. Im going with Goerend. Full trans upgraded flex and billet input.

Here is a poll i did a few weeks ago about a few transmissions. Hope this helps. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=190856

Getting a pre-built by the professionals is the best, but if you feel you can do it then you'll save some $$$.

Theres a reason there are transmission rebuilders out there and a reason why they get paid.

It is not just a slap in the clutch packs and go process.
There are a lot of clutch tolerances, a lot of specifications that need to be met.

There is also an advantage of knowing what you're doing.

I would vote to buy a transmission already built.

I am now bashing your mechanical ability I've just seen many people in my days that feel confident enough to do their own build and then they end up taking it to a shop..

Oh, well all the aftermarket ones are rebuilt. I'm pretty sure the only way you can actually get a brand new tranny is if you order another oem one from the dealer.

To answer your original question, there's only so much you can do to your current tranny. Torque converter, valve body, heavy duty 2nd gear band strut, front servo, and accumulator piston. Anything more and you'd have to get it rebuilt by a tranny expert like one of those in the poll (unless you do it yourself).

For a better idea of what can be done, incl easy upgrade from 47RE to stronger 48RE, take a look at the stuff at patcdotcom - on the other hand, some of the vendors run their completed trans rebuild on a transmission dyno, ensuring the seals and pressures are functional to spec and the transmission will handle the advertised torque input - most transmission shops don't even come close to that level of quality control - does pay to shop around
