Hour Meter
What I find amazing is that with industrial or marine Cummins/Onan products, the service intervals on the engine are based by the hour meter more than days or month's because miles don't exist and don't matter. However, put that same engine in a pick-up truck and she gets her oil changed so regular makes me wonder what's up with that. Can the road enviroment be more hostile than ocean swells, mines, oil patch etc.
In our manuals I can find no reference to the hour meter than how to work the **** thing. When did the service interval on a diesel change to mileage from hour?

Feel blessed that you even have an hourmeter, they didn't add them till recently.
I've always heard 50 miles roughly equals one hour.
And you're right, most people over-service these engines.
The 5.9 was originally designed for long life in export to third world countries where poor fuel and service practices are the rule, not the exception.

Mine does too, but doesn't it only go to 99:99 then back to zero? That would be useless as a maintenence reminder.

You have to consider this isn't like driving a truck though, on a hay cutter you usually only start it maybe a couple times a day then run it at operating rpm with a consistant load for up to ten hours straight without varying the rpm. Just the way a diesel engine loves to run.

I concur with the over-servicing thought: my oil changes average around 121 hours of run time.
But since DC's metric of choice is miles travelled (rather than engine hours, OR gallons of fuel consumed), and I'm still inside the warranty period - I'll continue to follow the DC book and do maintenance based on miles.
BTW, I'm averaging 37mph per hour of engine run time.

N.Johnson,
There is an hour meter in your trip odometer. Turn your key to the on position (do not start) push and hold in the trip odometer for about 6 seconds. It will then give you the hours.
Hope this helped.

When I was running my field service trucks the oil and filters were done @ 250hr intervals ,3500 dually's weighing 16 000lbs,w/service body ,crane, compressor, tooling. It worked out to 10 000kms per 250 hr. When I purchased my 2003 HO I called Cummins and asked the question of how many hours to service and was told regular and severe duty were to be done @ 500hrs due to the low sulpher content. Also I remember rumblings of extended service intervals before the CRD's were released in magazines, seems DC dealers wouldn't be doing very much servicing if that came about.
