Honda Diesel???

Paul Harvey made a comment regarding how well Honda is doing regarding their corporation and also mentioned that Honda is working on producing a diesel for the US market.

Anyone else here of this?
Do they already offer a diesel elsewhere at all?
I wonder if they are developing something in-house? Or a partnership?

I hope this is true.

Edit: should have googled first
These are a couple/three years old.

"My lug nuts require more torque than that thing makes! No wait, My starter makes more torque...I think I backed over one of those...My engine weighs more...

I'm sure it'll be a reliable engine. Some weenie in a honda pickup tried to race me a couple weeks ago, so I showed him some smoke.

The 2.2-litre i-CTDi engine produces 138bhp at 4000rpm and an impressive 250lb ft of torque from as little as 2000rpm. It features four valves per cylinder, common rail injection, a turbocharger and it has an all-aluminium block.

You guys make it sound like some kind of joke or is bigger always better? If so, you should be driving a Peterbilt instead of that wimpy Dodge Cummins when you run over to the corner store or down to the post office.

I'd love to have one of those Hondas!!! Wouldn't hurt my ego at all to get 70 MPG with that kind of performance. Even if I do have to watch out that you don't back over me on purpose. Where do I sign up?

One thing that we all seem to forget is even though we are nuts about Cummins anyone who decides that a diesel is a better option than a gas engine is taking a step in the right direction.
I’ve been all over the world. I’ve seen how many different countries get their people around and let me be honest in saying that the US is woefully slow in adopting diesel powered vehicles that are 2x as efficient as the gas ones we drive today. In Japan and Korea the Gas fueled car does seem to be the exception. And all of the taxi cabs are LP fueled diesel engines. Honda makes a good product. And if they made a diesel car or even a diesel minivan would be the big seller here in the states. One manf in Korea makes a Minivan with a small V-6 Diesel Auto enough room for 6 Americans comfortably 120 liter fuel tank and the thing gets (converted) about 34 miles to the gallon. My wifes GM Venture gets avg 20 MPG. The Dodge Grand Caravan she had before that got 21 MPG (but only had a 13 gal tank)

So snicker all you want Honda and Toyota Start Selling diesels in the US that get high 30’s in MPG and they are going to shave market share away from the big 3. Of course if the big 3 finally woke up and started to deliver many of our favorites with efficient Diesel power plants then Japan Auto Inc would have no advantage.

A big reason why diesels are slow to enter into the small car market in the states is because diesel engines create a lot of NOx emissions and the epa has strick regulations on how much NOx small cars can emmit. I believe that the pickups get away with it because they are over the 8600lb GVW and the emissions standards are less strict. So untill now there weren't any cheap ways of lowering NOx emissions enough to meet the epa requirements for small cars. I am sure that if a manufacturer wanted to sell diesel vehicles bad enough they can pay the epa off and sell as many as they want but apparently the manufacturers don't want to do that.

MPGs overseas

I bought my wife a town and country because the sticker said it would get 27 mpg on the highway. Well after a year and no better than 22 mpg we traded it for a New Beetle TDI that gets over 40. I done some reaserch and chrysler offers the same 2.8 crd motor thats in the Jeep Liberty in the Minivans overseas and they get 45 mpg on the highway. I cant wait till there avaible here then I will get one.

The Dodge Caliber will soon have a small Diesel with a six speed manual. Also the Jeep Commander, Compas, Cherokee, Durango, Dakota, and 1500 Ram will be running a Blue-Tec Diesel. MPG looks like it will be in the 25+mpg range in the 1500 2x4, and the engine will produce 230hp & 400tq.

Ours gets an average of around 26-27 in mixed driving . Haven't done a road trip with it to see what it will do on the highway yet.
