General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Actually the front end was done roughly a month ago. The transmission and the interior are probley the two biggest complaints. Power from the engine is incredible.. ac worked, all power worked. Well maybe I'll just see if he'll take 7k and I'll make it a project, well nothings final. I really want to build the tranny myself personally. I know that requires a lot of time and patience but it'll be a hell of a expirence to do it.

Well keep the comments coming... I'm really appreciating the advice.

If your talking about 2500 series, then it's rear seals and transfer case. If it's 3500 then it's lower ball joints. See sig.

Rick, I have no problems with the engine it's just the rest of the truck. So I wrote a email to the owner saying I'm interested but not for his asking price. He dropped it to $7600. So the question is then worth it? I'm looking to rebuild the engine, KDP, 4" exhaust, fuel plate, intake... then just maintain. Anybody want to throw more change ($.02) at me?

IMHO, you could spend that$7600 or less on a truck that would not REQUIRE all that much work. I paid just slightly over that for mine, just rolled about 230K on it and havent had any major issues yet. The only problems I have encountered stemmed from my lack of knowledge rather than flaws in teh truck.
I think I'd half that figure if it needs major repair, or look elsewhere.....take a look at whats available in that range in our classifieds here.. that would be a good gauge on value.....

I've looked all over craigslist/autotrader/cars.com all of California way up to Washington, but seems people like their diesel or it's out of my price range (13-15k). Plus I would I'm not sure how my car loan would be if I got a truck of state and the fees assiociated with bringing a truck from out of state.

I have a neighbor who has an 01 2500 6-spd. It has 250k miles, but it is mostly highway, and pulling empty smaller sized trailers (his brother owns a trailer business). The truck is bone stock and makes me feel embarrassed about our truck because of how clean he keeps his. He said it needs a valve adj., and the alternator might be goin out. I might be able to get him down in the 13-14k range, sound like a good deal?

I'm also lookin at another truck, same thing, except it has 167k mi. It has been modified (intake, hi-ram, gauges, lift, wheels/tires). It is from a dealer so I dont know if the previous owner had a box on it but I'm pretty sure he did. The dealer was checking it out because it might have lift pump or vp44 problems, but I can get this truck for the same price.

Sorry for the length but what do you guys think?
