HEY! You got painted black stacks?? C'mere.

Like the title says, You got painted (preferably BBQ style paint) stacks. Chime in and let me know exactly what you got, how long you had it (time AND mileage) and wether or not it's workin' out for ya.

Obviously I'm doin' the same thing, and I'd LOVE to learn from your mistakes!

Danke!

I don't have stacks, but I painted my exhaust pipe with high temp matte black. About a year, 7k miles and holding up fine.

I painted my husbands stacks with high temp engine paint from walmart. He has had them on for a year and a half and they still look great.

I would think that you need all aluminized piping. I'm having a hard time finding aluminized pipes to paint flat black. Chrome stacks are easy to find. I want all my piping to be flat black since I will be leaving all the plumbing exposed.

this place has aluminized piping, as well as aluminized stacks for those that dont want to paint over chrome.

My powder coated gloss black stack is holding up great...I had high temp paint before and it does not look nearly as good as powder coating!!!
by the time I bought high temp paint with a clear coat it cost only $5 bucks less for paint vs powder coating..
mine has been on for about 2-3 months.....

I don't have black stacks but I have been painting ( among other things ) for about 25 years. I would suggest that you use VHT paint on your stacks. Do a search and read up on it. You won't be dissappointed. Get the 1500 degree stuff.I think it's called VHT flamecoat or something like that. Works awesome but cure it like they tell you to.

Heres a link.

Ive got that VHT flamecoat. Ive been running it on my turbo for several months now and it looks great. I just put it through 3 300* cycles to cure it.

I doubt that ideling for 10 minutes, off for 20 will substantially heat the stacks. Their other method, baking a 3' stack in the oven, is not feasible.

Powdercoat gets baked on at 400*+/- if you want it gloss whatever color, get p-coat....if you want it flat black just use high temp paint as suggested.
p-coat starts to bubble around 5xx tho........
after a run around the block and a laser thermo gun my stack was 200* on the 5" part that comes through the bed and 160* on the 7" stack section.....

That's exactly what I want to do to mine, JIT. What did you use to prep the chrome stacks? Scotch brite pad or sandpaper or what?

I actually built my stacks from scratch and used 5" exh pipe from Napa. Took a 7 foot pipe and cut it at a 45deg angle to make two mitre cut stacks. scuffed them with a scotch brite pad and painted them with two coats. No problems at all with the paint sticking but they werent chromed either.

Good Luck!
