That's quite the find..I'm jelious buckshot...

There is an early eighties Rabbit (gasser) manual 4-door that's been for sale for over six months about a mile from me. It's dark green and in near prestine shape. Still has the original wheel covers, even. I think the only reason it hasen't sold is that the gasser's aren't really sought after like the old diesel's are. Anyone know of a good source for a diesel to swap in there?

Actually, 2.5in straight exhaust, I've got an AFE drop in flat filter that a customer gave me out of a Golf TDi, and I'm going to build a snorkel to the front of the car for more air. The older rabbit just scavenge there air from the engine compartment. I was think'n a 4 or 5in stack through the hood.

Well I got it home this morning. Tried to start her, jut cranked. I cracked the injector lines, bled them and she fired right up, WOOHOO!

I got a problem with it though. After I got it running I noticed a fuel leak. It looks like its coming from the back of the injection pump. Has anybody ever had one of these apart? It's a Bosch VE pump. It looks like it has been leaking for a while cause I noticed some red rtv around the bottom of the pump.

Another thing I found on this little guy is, were the spare is suppose to go (in the trunk) the previous owner added what looks to be a transfer or extra tank, 9.2 gallons according to the sticker. Anybody know anything about these?

I also found an original service invoice from a VW dealer from 1979. It appears the old man that died bought this thing new. So I guess I'm the 4th owner. This thing has changed hands 3 of the 4 times in the past 6 months.

Great cars but after you figure out the leak you MUST change the timing belt! When I was discharged from the navy (NMCB5) in 1988, I left from Port Hueneme to Pa. I made it about 5 hours than I lost the timing belt. I was stuck on I 15 in the desert! I can laugh about it now, but really, change that darn belt. Rich

Sounds like the pump head seal is bad. A complete reseal kit for those pumps is around $25 from a Bosch pump shop. If you want to do it yourself, let me know and I'll email you a link to a "How To" thread on a VW board.

That would be great! I did find an exploded view of the pump and there is an o-ring between the head and the case and that's what looks like seals it. I just need to know if I can replace the o-ring with the pump on the car. I saw those $25.00 reseal kits. Those are a steal!

Congrats, I have been shopping around for one of those lately. When I sell my ATV I will buy one. 55 is a magic number for that car. 55hp, 55mph, 55mpg.

I got a hold of the local Diesel injection shop here and he's going to reseal/rebuild the pump with upgraded seals and turn the pump up for me for $350.00. Seems pretty fair. When there done with it, it will also handle Biodiesel if I ever decide to run it.
