Why does the grid heater need to be intact? What about the BHAF air filters? I have the BHAF and no grid heaters. Good thing they didn't ask to have me do a smog check this year. But next year, I may need to replace the grid heater, what ever that has to do with emissions is a mystery.

 

So this law only applies to 1997 and newer diesels right? My tags are good till Oct. but I haven't heard anything yet. I would pass anyway.

 

Biodiesel may help you guys pass these emissions tests. I have run up to 80% in mine out of curiousity. No smoke.

 

I was told 98 and up are going to be smogged so u might be one of the lucky ones.

 

Grid heaters are considered part of the emission system. Air horn intake mods and cat back exhaust mods seem to be acceptable according to the literature.

 

I guess when I redo my font end and upgrade my brakes in the next 2 or 3 weeks, I'll hook up my grid heater as well. I can't see how heating up air is part of the emissions. But those guys must be smart, they get me to send them more money than they send me . Thanks for the info, BRO

 

For the 2nd Gen trucks. What about the puke bottle PVC mod? Does that piece of junk bottle have to go back in there to pass?

 

Mine passed without it...I didnt do any relocation of the puke bottle...just flat out removed it...and they didnt even question....

In cold weather heating the intake air reduces smoke emissions. I have observed this on my own truck since I have disconnected my grid heaters to allow the battery to charge on short trips. With the heaters operating the truck smokes much less on cold starts during cold weather.

 

Glad we don't have to worry about that here in Montana. Any rigs over 10 years old and you can buy the permanent tags. Registration is good for the life of the truck.

 

Here in Nevada they strap your diesel down to a load-cell roller just like a dyno and allow you to bring up from 5mph to 45mph and then back to zero. Before the test they do a visual check for intact exhaust system and then put a light/opacity sensor on the exhaust tip. You're allowed 40% max on the older trucks, 30% or so on the newer ones.

Let me tell you, with me behind the wheel, I can bring it up to speed slow enough to let the turbo get spooled and make less than 1% smoke with my dirty running Jammer 5's.

If NV did a snap throttle test, I don't think I could pass with standard diesel fuel, I'd have to run Biodiesel B20 and make sure I tested early in the morning on a cool day.

 

If you have an Edge on stock and just use if for the gauges will it pass? Or does it have to be removed?

If they can see that the edge is pluged in to either the MAP or Wire Taped they will FAIL it (if they know what they are looking for that is)

I passed mine with a Quadzilla Commander, but that truly is a STAND ALONE digital guage set. There was no chip or wire tap on the truck.

Has anybody passed with aftermarket injectors besides rv275's?

What about the turbo, are they really looking for it to say HOLSET on it? I would think besides the name stamped on the housing and a slightly larger outlet, there would be not much to differentiate between the stock turbo and say a schwitzer s300.

 

I had mine done and I think because I had guages hed apent about 30 minutes looking over the truck.. Spent alot of time around the turbo.. also took the book out and then went back to the turbo He actually spent a long time around the turbo then hooked it up to the computer and passed the truck...

I watched the video from BAR and it tell them that if there are guages it is an indicator that there are modifications.. But that guages are in no way a fail..

From what the video says this test is because to many people modify Diesels and they spit to much smoke out. so I guess I am paying $60.00 every other year because people mod their trucks.. Oh well.. Mod them away..!!
