Has anybody taken the CA emissions test yet?

I did mine to sell it...
Snap test was done first...he started the truck to pull it into the bay and did 3 very quick snap tests...pulled it in the shop and let it idle...looked at me and said well one down two to go...
he poped the hood, and started looking...pulled out a sheet of paper that I assume told him what my truck should have as far as emmisions stuff...looked under the motor at my Crank Vent and then looked at the top end stuff....walked down to the passenger side rear door...looked under and noted no cat...asked me what year it was again and I said 1999, he opened the driver door and checked the VIN and build date and cross referenced the sheet again and said...OK no cat from factory...then he said TWO down one to go...
went to the computer and started typing in VIN info and other stuff...walked back and pluged in the OBD II and then went back to the computer...hit a button and started staring at the screen...walked back to the OBD and unpluged it...
he came back to me as said It's a bit loud and but not loud enough to not pass...
he said he checked the turbo, and checked for chips and as far as he was concerned thats is what the state requires him to do...everything else was as it should have been..he said he watched the youtube videos where the guy (his words not mine) "acted like he knew what he was talking about" explained that dodge trucks will puff smoke on start up but will clear up. and as long as the trucks he smogged did just that he saw no problems.
he took me into the office and we chatted abit and then he issued me my PASS notice and said one had been sent electronicly to the DMV...
he said, the snap test was clear of smoke on all three goes, and he didnt see any chips (I told him he wouldnt cuz there were none) and he said my turbo was stock, he said the OBD showed no codes and MIL status was ready...
all in all a very harmless experience...my smog was 88 bucks...
I dont like it any more than the rest of you, and if I had a truck that was as built as most of the people I would most likely be worried with the thousands I would have invested...but if you have the means and parts to put it back to stock for the one day test...DO IT...the test itself is not that bad.
just my two cents, and dont kill me messanger....

Ok don't hate me but I am a CA smog tech and have had to smog about 15 diesels and have passed all but one, the Ford 6.0 that was traded in and had no cat so that was no question, we have Chevy VW and MBZ lines, only seen 2 dmaxes and the rest were VW's. The snap test is not too much too worry about because the smoke has 3 seconds to dispurse. I think that most of the problems are going to be aftermarket parts that are not approved, there is a list that the BAR has put out of parts thta are ok that at first they were wanting us to fail, the biggest is the allowance of any E-brake as long as all the sensors, and cats are still there. Any questions let me know I will try and help.

So what do you mean the smoke has 3 seconds to clear? 3 seconds to clear from the air by the time it is already out of the exhaust pipe? Every cloud of smoke i've seen lingers on for longer then 3 seconds.

as for the intake horn it depends on how much it replaces, best thing to do is contact the Co. that makes it and ask them.

with regard to the "horn" question....it is gonna take interpetation on the tech for the first few tests....DMV and CARB lists "HORN" as an acceptable aftermarket product...but they dont say what a "Horn" is....some people call there intake bellow from the air box the "horn" we know it to not be the same thing most of us are talking about....after awhile I think CARB is gonna get the picture and allow both....COLD AIR INTAKE filters and intake tubing as well as INTAKE HORNS
right now BANKS HIGH RAM intake horns are listed as 50 state smog CARB legal.

I can't see the smog being harmless. It's a waste of $90 and my time.
I've got a cold air intake--is that going to be a problem? I don't see how you can pay money to make your truck more fuel efficient and then get dinged for it a few years later.
Are they measuring the db level? I've got a MBRP exhaust--reviews said it wasn't that loud--it's louder then I would prefer--but I had already spent the money on the exhaust and the install--so it didn't make any sense to swap it out.

All the intake horns should be fine as long as the grid heater is intact. The cost should come down. Gas smogging averages $40.00 here. Most of the CAI's are Carb approved now also. If they start measuring db's,they should start with the Harley's.
