Our Jetta is a wagon and is usually pretty well loaded. It gets between 42 and 45 mpg, 5 speed auto trans, and has about 12,000 miles now. These are great little cars.

Thats all?!?!? If I get less than 50mpg on my 2003 5-speed TDI, then something is wrong with the engine.

You will see your milage get better as you approch 40K miles.

My personal best was a trip from NJ to NH keeping at 65mph ... 58.75 mpg.

Best of luck in the new little car.

We love ours. The Beetle's best is 48.5 and the Jetta's is 43.

Our 1978 diesel Rabbit had a 45 liter (9.9 imperial gallon or 11.8 US gallon) fuel tank. That car had a long range per tank full. Consistantly hand calculated with a fuel tank topped to the neck, the mileage was 57.9 mpg with #1 diesel in the summer and 54 mpg with #2 diesel in the winter time. The vehicle had a four speed manual transmission and the engine cylinder head had pre-combustion chambers.

Our heavy 1980 Mercedes TDS I-5 diesel had an automatic transmission and its mileage caluclated out to 35 mpg.

Pardon my scrambled thought process. The mileage given in my previous message should have been 59.7 mpg with #2 diesel in the summer and 54 mpg with #1 diesel in the winter. In our cold winter climate the mileage would have been unavailable as #2 fuel would jell in the winter and starve the injector pump. The summer mileage would be lower as #1 fuel has less BTUs.
Sorry I slipped up again.

Love my 02 beetle tdi. Automatic. Drove it back from Conn. to NC with A/C on going 70-80mph and got 43.9 hand calculated. Only had 11000 miles on it. VW owns audi and beetle is on shortend A-3 chassis and will really squeal tires slinging around curves with minimal body roll. Great little car. Now has 40k, love it. I didn't know you could get a vw diesel in 06. I think I would like a Passat diesel.

I get on a regular basis from my '03 Jetta 50.XXX MPG and that is with driving it like I enjoy driving not like I want MPG.

Still miss my truck. I wish the VW came with better/more comfortable seats. These kill my back and due to that I am getting rid of it as soon as I can afford to. Its going to be painfull to go back to under 25mpg on a regular basis though.

This past Saturday, I fired up the GPS and did a speedometer check on the new NewBeetle. The Bug's speedo overreports by ~3-4mph while actually doing 70mph . For some reason my GPS kept jumping up and down in speed, but eventually settled down indicating the speedo error. I now need to find out if it is just the speedo or if the Odometer is likewise reading high. If so, I may have to verify the calibration data for these Continental tyres that came on the Bug new.
I also found out that thing will FLY! I opened it up on a straight section and it hit 100(indicated) very quickly. It wanted to keep going faster but I was approaching an area with too many "radars".... It shows it's heritage as it was VERY comfy and smooth running at those speeds.
Next long trip I'll get geared up to do a mileage test along with a speedo/odometer test.
Surprisingly, my '97 CTD is DEAD-ON accurate in the speedo/odo department.

K.

Best mileage on our 06 was 48.35 mpg. In the winter here, it gets around 40. even with it plugged in. Hell this morning it was -36, in the garage it was 47, and it took 10 minutes for the gauge to move off the lowest line. Thank god for heated seats.
