the vent trick is so simple when you take the cap off to put fuel in, on the backside of the fill tube there is a little button,what i do is take the end of the nozzle and press the button back(towards the middle of the car)as i'm filling when fuel finally shows up towards the top, stop the fuel flow and let set,the foam should drop then just keep giving it little shots til its all fuel at the top.i can usually get another 1 1/2 to 2 gallons in mine. or you can do a ventectomy which involves removing part of that button,the tdi site has a write-up on how to do this.

 

They are supposed to have the HPRC's out early for the 08's.. I haven't heard a date... Parents bought an 06 Jetta 6sp Auto... just about always been in the 50's... they sure noticed a differance when they filled up with a tank of Bio... (they didn't look at the %) They stopped driving the truck, after buying that thing...

 

BlackSheep: It's simple... Once it is full and the diesel foam has gone away and the fuel level in the neck won't go down anymore using the "normal" method, take a really close look inside the tank filler neck. About the 7 or 8 o'clock position ( while facing the filler neck) you'll see a little black "****" slightly protruding into the neck almost at the bottom of the threads for the fuel cap. Using the filler nozzle, I depressed it and "whoosh" the fuel in the neck disappeared! I used the filler nozzle to keep it depressed while I gently put almost 1-3/4 more gallons into that tank. Using this method makes more accurate mileage calculations too!
There is a mod they call a "VentEctomy" which completely extracts that little spring loaded vent valve and allows quicker foam venting.
This is a manufacturing design holdover for the gasoline powered vehicles which use the same tank.
The tank was built with a dedicated vapor space (camel hump)that is only vented and equalized with the filler neck when the cap is screwed back on(depressing the vent valve!)This helps ensure that the public will not overfill the tank and on a warm day cause the gasoline to expand, leaking back through the emissions cannister etc to the ground .
The TDI's, using #2-oil, don't need or have all that vapor recovery hogwash! But, the tank neck ventvalve stuff is still the same...

CDITRANI: Yeah, I was reading that over on TDICLUB.COM and I was shaking my head at such governmental whizdumb . They won't even allow a new one to be registered in their state!
I find it curious that you can't buy a TDI Golf/Beetle/Jetta or Passat in MA (NY too?) *BUT* they didn't ban sales of the $50,000++ SUV-sized Touareg with the big V10 TDI engine in it! After all, the Touareg SUV is considered a "truck" and apparently the states of MA and NY etc view emissions different for "trucks"...

I do think its dumb that they won't let them sell the diesel that gets 50% better fuel milage than the gasser...

We went on a trip up to MA the other weekend and averaged 43 MPG. A good deal of this was stop/go driving.

 

Yes you can bring it in. I don't know the details, but if it's been registered in another state previously you can register it here in MA.

 

Had a professor at Wheaton College who picked up an '03 manual transmission wagon TDI, and on his and his wife's first out of town jaunt, to Boston from Chicago, they averaged 62mpg hand-calculated! He has driven diesel vechiles since he picked up a M-B 220d in 1967 in Germany. He still had the 220d which is still prestine even with 250k on it.

They traded the '03 wagon for an '06 manual sedan and he's a bit less happy overall with it. Last time I talked with him he mentioned this car would not get over 55 mpg. Wow...must be tough...

 

Yeah, I understand that the new A5's don't get as good fuel mileage as the older models. My best has been a couple of 47's; I wonder if I should slow down.

 

My outlaws have an 06 TDI, the absolutely LOVE it.

I would like to have one as my beater in the future, they are so hard to come by though. We could have had one in July 05, my wife insisted on the Accord

I've been really happy with mine. Best tank I've had was 43 mpg. That was with about 50/50 hwy/city and driving really easy. Through my experience 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil has increased the mileage a couple mpgs.

I've got a Ham Radio get together in Belton this spring and I'll give mine the 100%highwaymiles/oncruise@72mph/norabbitstarts/roundtrip mileage test.

Some of those TDI guys get plum SERIOUS about making mileage! Some are shooting for WAY over 60+mpg!

Our PD engines don't get quite as good MPG as the older VE pumped TDI engines.

Funny how this follows the same as our CTD's.. 1st gen CTD's with the VE pumps are pretty much the MPG kings...

Yes I always say this, I regret getting rid of my 02 TDI GLS Golf, which got 50 MPG or more without trying (75 MPH).

We just took a little trip in the 04 Jetta (automatic) and got 43 MPG. A good deal of this was stop/go driving, but still, the difference between the PD vs. pre-PD engine, 5spd manual vs. any auto, and Golf vs. Jetta put together is pretty big.

Oh well. This is my wifes car, but in the past year we put 5K on my truck and 15K on hers. Just doesn't make sense to drive my truck.

 

We have an '03 TDI Jetta GLS 5 speed that gets 45 mpg, thats a mix of highway/city driving. She loves that car, we looked all over for one with leather. Hers is all black.

 

I bough tmy wife a 02 tdi beetle. Found out were having twins and I already have a 20 month old so I inhereted the beetle and got her a durango. I like the TDI so much I'm looking for an older one to do a motor transplant into a Triumph Spitfire. Looking for 60+ MPG after the switch.
