"General' Cummins repairs
I am a relatively new Cummins owner. I presently own a '01 24 valve. I'm curious to some general costs of repairs. I know many claim a Cummins runs forever, but nothing runs forever. I know many repairs result from lack of maintenance but that's not the scenario with me. I am very much on target with regular maintenance. I'm curious to "typical" costs for labor/parts for the following: injectors, injector pump & turbo.

injector pump replacemt w/ parts and labor is $2200 at a dealer.
injectors are relatively inexspensive. A good diesel shop can usually fix a set as well as replace them. 275 injectors are around $400 or so. Labor around $200.
I beleive the turbo is around $800. dont quote me though. Turbo replacement can be done in your driveway.
Many items in this engine are really easy to replace. Like lift pumps, ps pumps, hydro boost, water pump etc.

Assuming good quality diesel is purchased, good quality fuel filters are purchased and replaced regularly (ie 8,000 mile intervals), engine is not overheated, vehicle is used for moderate tow loads (ie 7k lbs), and turbo is cooled down at shut off, what might the life expectancey be for the injectors, inj pump, & turbo?

Assuming all the above I would expect the life to be well in excess of 300,000 miles. There are a bunch around that mileage without any major repairs.

300,000? Is that realistic. In discussion with Cummins tech's at a local Dodge dealership, I was told "expect to replace the injector pump at 100,000 miles......and it's about $4,000 PARTS & LABOR".

Id suggest sitting down and doing some (well maybe a LOT) of reading on this and some of the other Cummins sites on the net. You can and will save yourself a ton of money and gain to collective knowledge of a LOT of people. Most of the info here is quite accurate.
$4000 for an injector pump?? Thats like Stamey being quoted $15000 for a $5000 engine.... I believe that you can get a remanufactured VP44 for under a thousand. The life of the VP44 is dependant on several factors. The injector pump is cooled by the fuel so its very important to have enough fuel supply....this is mainly why guys are adding pusher pumps and FASS systems, high flow banjo bolts and changing fuel lines to 1/2"....I think the trucks that get used HARD and have fuelling boxes to increase fuelling generally have more problems (there is a bit of luck involved also ). The VP44 generally die and early death when they are starved for fuel (from a bad lift pump). With a bit of preventive maintenance your fuel system will be fine. I wont hazard to guess on injector pump life - it really varies and depends on a number of factors.
Do some research, make the necessary modifications including a fuel pressure guage and enjoy your truck.

Well, greatwhite is a 93 with 377,000 km (225000miles) and so far I have replaced , oh yeah NOTHING on the engine save one unneccesary alternator while trying to find a no charge condition. 300000 miles would be very realistic and attainable IMHO. What kills ALL diesels is short trips with not enough warmup and /or cooldown time. If you are doing the things you posted, you will have a long living happy Cummins. Rick

I don't have as much as greatwhite, but I am in the same boat... 145,000 mi (243,000km) on the '93 and never have had to turn a wrench on the engine. I have changed the thermostat though, does that count? recently I had it on the dyno at cummins to measure blow-by. It is still "as new"

I lost a lift pump on my truck around 175,000 miles (broken spring)
Around 650,000 miles (I'd have to go outside to look at my record book) I was coming back to Tx from Ca when no. 5 injector backed out and started leaking compression. I couldn't pinpoint the noise at the time so when I got back I put a new set of injectors in. That's the only thing I've done to the motor itself and it's still making me money everyday. I've got 676,500 on it now
