gas can to diesel

Want to use a 5 gallon metal gas can for diesel that was used for gas. Anything I need to do besides swash some diesel around in there and dump it out?

Clearly mark it DIESEL FUEL so someone else doesn't fill it later with gasoline.

Make sure the can isn't galvanized. The diesel will leach out one of the compounds that will clog the injectors. If you go to farm supply stores you will see warning on funnels and gas cans.

With the price of fuel today mark it with " Contaminated Waste Oil". If you write diesel fuel on it you might get held up & robbed!

Go get a 5 gallon yellow plastic jug. They don't cost a whole mess.

That's an excellent idea. I've had two 2 1/2 gal. cans stolen right off my trailer in my own church parking lot. Now I bought a cable lock for them. Can't trust anyone these days.

Thanks all for info/suggestions.

The one I have is a military 5 gallon can. Only one I've owned that doesn't leak.

Anyway, does anyone have an idea if the military 5 gallon cans are usually galvanized??

I'm marking mine "HIV+".

Didn't know about the galvanized deal, I've been carrying fuel for the bobcat and kubota in a galv. 5 gallon can. Oh well.

My wife ran the push mower on either diesel or 2 stroke pre-mix. When it started smoking, she kept mowing. When it started smoking her out, she finally stopped and called me and told me that something was wrong. I asked her if she added gas (I knew the regular gas can was empty). She said yes, so I knew what was wrong. I just mixed gas in with it and and ran it. It cleared right up, I never even needed to change the spark plug. Just a hundred dollar mower.

I called my dad once for some pre-mix for the weed whip, and he said yeah in the back of the garage in a small gas can...turns out it was diesel my dad had used for burning a stump...weed whip smoked like a b1tch but didnt even foul out the plug...turns out the pre-mix was in a smaller can, farther into the back of the garage. accidentally put diesel into the ol' cub cadet once...it ran though, kinda nice to have all the smoke...it smells good, looks cool, and keeps the mosquitos away.

keeps the mosquitos away...

reminded me- last week I ran out of diesel in my 6gal can for my tractor (which is galvanized- didn't know that'd be a problem, I'll get a yellow can next time I'm in Wally world.. thanks for the advice..)

looked in the garage, and saw some citronella tiki torch oil... smells like citronella, but is mostly kerosene... and some old (2002) virgin vegetable oil..

mixed it in the 3 gal tank on the tractor to do a little work on my driveway and the neighbor's...

funny, the bugs weren't bothering me on the tractor at all..

tractor (mid '80s Mitsubishi... 1.3L IDI 3-cylinder, which is very tolerant of fuel) seemed a little down on power, and seemed to use more fuel (probably due to kerosene, but was still running very well)

I regularly put 2-4 quarts of straight veggie oil in the tank mixed with Diesel (less in the winter, more in the summer) with no other effects than an different odor in the exhaust... but that was the first time I tried the citronella...
