Four (unrelated) stories, for the price of 1!
Story 1
A couple weekends back, I went from Montgomery, AL to south-central IL and picked up an airstream. It was only a 23 or 24 footer with nothing in it. I'm guessing it to be ~4,000 lbs. I took it to Marietta, GA. On the way to GA I topped off in KY, and towed from there to Marietta, then (not towing) all the way back to Montgomery on less than 28.5 gallons. When I was towing I swear I had to be getting close to 15 mpg. Of course I tow at 65 mph unless I'm running late for supper. Good ole truck!
Story 2
Went to a local car race and parked on the infield cause I was going to lend a hand to some guys I was emailing with. I didn't know'em, but I just didn't want to just sit on my butt at the track so I was going to help them out. Turns out these guys were goofs who completed all of 0.6% of the race (NOT JOKING) before their engine blew. The guy was piddling around with camber, and swapping one junker tire for another, running like 22 psi in the left front "to make it turn left." When I heard the sad thing crank I was like, dude, forget the camber, I think you need to worry about keeping it cool. Kept my mouth shut cause it wasn't my car. Oh I digress. Anyway, I parked my truck and put up my own canopy (earlier in the day), and had a cooler with drinks and had been chillin' until the goof-ball-brothers racing team showed up. During practice, a guy came up out of nowhere and said, "with all the trucks in the infield, if this were a truck show, you'd take 1st prize." And then proceeded to ask a bunch of fairly intelligent questions about it (fairly meaning he hadn't owned one so why would he know in the first place).
I couldn't have agreed more (of course ), my truck was lookin' good. Good ole truck!
Story 3
Last night (9/1) I hauled my Harley up to Gadsden to a nice lady and her father (retired sickle cop, lucky son-of-a-xxxxx) who bought it sight unseen from Hogs4sale. Fetched a fair price too! Nice lady, her and her dad were going to share it. Lived on the river in Rainbow City, absolutely beautiful. I digress again. Anyway, on the way up there, a DMax was pulling an open trailer with looked like a couple Palm or Coconut trees (hard to tell, they were laying down). Looked like total he had less than 6,000 lbs. Not much at all. He was out in the left lane in rush hour traffic making everyone happy, when I noticed a puff of smoke, like he whomped down on it. Of course no acceleration. Then a couple more bigger puffs and I suspected I'd see a right blinker. Sure enough, he's wanting over. He goes for the far right lane, and rides it for about 1/4 of a mile and then all hel... let's make that all aluminum lets go and boy howdy, what a smoke show. On the curb it goes. I would've stopped to help him out, but I had a Harley to deliver. I gave my truck a wink and said, "ata boy, that's a good Cummins, keep on a'hummin."
Story 4
On the way back from Gadsden/Rainbow City, I decided I should fuel up in B'ham because the fuel situation in Montgomery was/is getting a bit dicey. I topped off at the Flying J just north of the big city. Had 465.3 miles on mixed driving, and the cruise up to Rainbow City and back to B'ham. Took 23.435 gallons. 19.85 mpg. Not too shabby.
On my way to Montgomery, I decided if the fuel station I like to re-fuel at that I pass by on my way to my house was nearly the same price or cheaper, I'd top it off again. It was 10 cents cheaper, so I topped off. I had 105.1 miles on it and filled it to the neck (as always) with 4.713 gallons. 22.30 mpg. That was with the cruise set on 70 mph. Good ole truck!
Now I ask you: Why in world would I want to sell this truck? It shore is one good looking cream puff. 85,000+ miles. An EZ with elbow, RV275's, and MEK. Sounds good, looks good, tows excellent, and excellent fuel mileage.
Yessir, I believe I'll keep'er a few more years. She's been paid off since 2003. I'm a happy camper!

Mike -
I was born and raised in the south (GA). In '99 I moved to MI. Before I moved up there I thought I would hate it. I'm really surprised how much I like MI. The roads were rough and the taxes were high but it grew on me. I worked in Ann Arbor, but lived out in the country southwest of Ann Arbor (Tecumseh area).
When I drove through IL, it reminded me of where I lived in MI. Straight roads and corn fields. It was nice, I liked the area.
