Ford 6.0 Powerstroke
Interesting article in the new trailer life mag about the new Ford. The new electronic variable response turbo that doesn't require a wastegate sounds interesting.... among other features... I'm probably way behind in reading this info, but I don't look around at Ford stuff much! Just thought I would share...<br><br>Tony

Cummins makes a variable geometry turbo charger for the ISB as well, but it's not available in DC applications. I have seen that engine with it on advertised in a fire service publication.

I heard some of you guy's talking about going across a pass, pulling heavy and keeping the rpm's pegged at 3000 because the next gear couldn't keep it moving. Sounds preety close to a high reving V8 to me. Take care WRP 8)

WA Horseman, what size tires do you have on that Ford? I had a '97 F-350 PSD ZF 5 sp. with 4.10s and RPM was higher than 2100 when at that speed.<br><br>It was stock, factory downpipe, and never felt any power until over 2000 rpm. That's the first thing I noticed when shifting the Dodge CTD, it's working RPM range is much lower than the PSD's. It's seems you're over revving past 2000 RPM.<br><br>I think the V-8 design is used primarily to fit the engine compartments.

I don't really understand the high revving concept myself. At 1900 RPM the DMax runs 65 MPH with 3.73 gears. The 1998 Dodge 3500 with 4.10s runs 2200 at the same speed. I realize that the torque peaks a little sooner on the CTD than it does on the PSD or DMax, but in the RPM range where most of the work is done, 40 to 75 MPH, they all seem to be about the same to me.
Niether will hold OD and 65MPH on grades when scaled at 19,500 lbs, and when the DMax down shifts to 4th it goes to 2500 RPM at 65 MPH. When the CTD down shifts to 3rd, it goes to 2600 RPM or maybe a little higher at 65 MPH. This is just my experience with the DMax and the 1998 3500 CTD that we have.
I haven't noticed, maybe the CTD would start a load better, but at highway speeds, there doesn't seem to be much difference.

My bad on that it should read 2100 at 65. I don't have my tire size incoded to memory and i'd probably forget by the time I walked out and back but they are the tallest I could get on the factory aluminum wheel. Now Ive driven cummins powerd dodges of the same year (97) and shure didnt notice much dif. in when the power came on Except slightly lower in the rpm range, say 1850 vs 1900 for my truck. All this in stock form mind you. But still what is your redline? I looked this morn and the powerstroke is 3800. That solid red, gets orange at 3400. 8) take care WRP

2001 Chebby D-max ZF-6, 3.73 gears, stock 245/75/16 tires, 2000 RPM @ 70mph. Right where I like it. Does a good job getting a load up to speed, but when she hits 1800-1900, WATCH OUT!!! 8)

8) Yeah, but when you go over a mountain pass pulling 10g's worth of trailer I'll bet your not in O.D. and or under 2200 rpm to keep it going . Thats what I'm getting at . The CTD, when towing hard is reving up, just as much or real close(with in a couple of hundred rpm's) to our " high reving V8's.

Yep, I agree as well. I was pretty disappointed last summer pulling a pretty good grade (6% or more, not sure) with the 5er (17900 combined weight), truck went from 72 to 40 pretty fast and was revved waaaay up and not gaining any speed. At least it was holding at 40.<br><br>Now I have everything upgraded and i'm looking forward to running that route again sometime this year! ;D<br><br>Tony<br><br>(I think it was I-40 from NC into TN, anyone know what that grade is?
