I see no need to fuel from the big nozzles. I do use the high volume stations, and go to the regular lanes. It all comes outa the same tanks in the ground.

You know...I'm all for being courteous at the pumps (to everyone...not just truckers), but I also think that I have just as much right to be at that pump as they do. Just because they drive a big rig doesn't mean they own the pump...just like it doesn't mean they own the road. Respect goes both ways in my opinion. I see truckers fill their trucks up, go in to pay, use the restroom, play video games, etc.....all the while with their truck still sitting at the pump. He doesn't have any regard for people waiting in line.

If there's a line, I generally pull away from the pump before I go pay, but if I don't....and some trucker decides he wants to come after me with his bat because he needs to get back on the road.....well, he's gonna have a mess on his hands. :

Like Spots though, I don't normally use the big nozzles anyway unless the regular ones are occupied when I get there. If I DO use the big nozzle though, the truckers can wait on me just like I've had to wait on them. I'm not gonna linger longer than I have to, but I am gonna finish topping my tank off.

Re:Filling up with the big rigs

Hoss, I HAVE seen the KIND of "ladies" that run around in the truck stops, but if you really wanna know, where I buy my fuel isn't a "real" truck stop, it's more of a gasser station that has a couple high speed pumps and one that is marked "AUTOS". Since I can tell you don't get out much, do you know anything about the UAB medical college, some VERY nice honeys buy a lot of gas in the area ;D, kinda out of the way to drive, unless I'm on the way to the motor shop or doing work at the UAB hospital, but the summer time view is FANTASTIC, and still a lot of good looking legs in the winter, just to keep the attention level up.

Re:Filling up with the big rigs

Getting back to filling up with the big rigs.

I prefer to fill up at the low-volume pumps bc, in my experience, the big-rig pump stations are NASTY! What I mean by that is, there's usually fuel all over the ground around the pump & the pump handle is also usually covered with it. May not matter to some diesel-heads but I kinda like to keep my vehicle's floormats & hands clean. Besides, now that I no longer own a GM 1T I'd kinda look out of place in my junker VW Dasher; plus I don't think I'd be able to fill up its 11 gallon tank without making a mess. Not to mention, being constantly 'bugged' by well-meaning folks telling me that I need to go over to the gas fuel pumps since my Dasher is obviously a gasser NOT a diesel (I guess it would help if I put the "VW Dasher Diesel" emblem back on the rear hatch. Nah!).

I solve that problem three ways:

First I keep a pair of cheapie yellow gloves for the pumps. They have rubberry texture on the outside. You can buy them at Big R or KMart for $3/pr.

Second I keep a gallon jug of clay kitty litter handy (in tool box) to dump on my flipped over floor mats. Rub your feet on the clay litter as you drive. Eliminates the odor and the mess on your boots. Don't use bentonite or clumping litter!

Third, I carry a small bottle of GoJo (orange cleaner) for the occasional times when the fuel gets onto my hands, because I forgot to put the gloves on in time. The GoJo takes care of greasy film and smells good too. And a roll of paper towels so I can get the grit off my hands instead of wiping them on my Carhartts.

Hey he might be married but he ain't dead. You can browse the menus all over town, but remember to eat at home. Hey Pumpdaddy just remember that some truck stops do have questionable "ladies"...

Re:Filling up with the big rigs

At our local Loves (very dirty and the employees are trained to be rude), I can go to either one. It just depends on the lines. Normally, I fuel at the Shell/Texaco or the Phillips 66 on the interstate between work and home. If I do use the big-rig pumps, I make sure I run it very slowly. I also grab some paper towels before lifting the handle since most are usually very grimy and I don't want that in my Ram.

About a year or so ago, I sniffed the nozzel at the Phillips 66 and found it full of mud because of an extremely strong sand storm out in my area. If I hadn't gotten into the habit of sniffing, I wouldn't have seen the mud and it would have been in my tank and clogging my filter. At the small pumps (where they dispense both gas & diesel), I sniff the nozzel just to be sure it's truly pumping diesel.

You and me both. Twice I've run into problems on the road, where the pump is marked diesel, but it wasn't. At truck stops I look for water seps on the pumps.

Its for this reason that I always fill at the lower volume pumps. The high volume pump on low flow isn't going to pump that much more quickly than the low volume pump max'ed out, and I'm not in the way of a trucker whose often on a schedule.
