the 7.3 is a good motor...the 12 valve cummins was the most reliable..the initial 24 valve motors had massive pump problems so not much to brag about vs the 7.3 because that motor was just starting to get tuned fairly well (dumb Ford dropped it)..500 torque at 1600rpms is a lie(7.3 PS)....that motor pulls from 2000rpm onwards but it pulls nice....i know u guys wont admit it but when u have a stock auto tranny on our dodge and u get ur GSK's u pretty much pull like a PS...which is good....get a strong low stall TC and u have all the low end of the cummins finally!! but the PS can never get that.....maybe their 444E version has peak torque at 1600rpms but not the pick-up version

"I'm supprised to hear you say that the PS was out of breath at 2600. A buddy of mine had a 99.5 PS and at about 1900 the turbo lit and pulled VERY hard all the way to the top speed limiter at 95mph. It was a 6 speed truck, though."
Pulling hard is relative. I removed a '99 PSD from my truck (6 speed) and replaced it with an 05 CTD. (325/600). The CTD pulls way harder, everywhere.
If you look at a 7.3 PSD torque curve, you'll see a peak of 500 ftlbs at 1600 RPM, but you'll also see it drop off a lot below that and somewhat above that. At 2750, it doesn't make much more than 400 ftlbs. The 325/600 has a flat torque curve (600 ftlbs) from 1600 to 2900. That is a day and night difference. A PSD runs out of breath as the RPMs climb because the torque drops off. The CTD just keeps pulling.

Went on a hunting trip this weekend with 3 Fords and 1 01 Duramax. One of the Fords was a 05 King Ranch (super nice truck) an 03 6.0 (also nice) and an 01 7.3. One thing I have to say is that none of these guys new about their own trucks. Except they had "chips" and turbo back exhaust. When I pointed out their Cats they were Super surprised, saying "does my truck have one too?". I also asked them if they had ANY problems with their trucks. "No NO problems these are great trucks, in fact a lot of Dodge guys we know are buying them". Turns out two days later the guy with the 01 has a big $ tranny. Now can I believe the other two? Getting into the back seat of the Crew cab I kept getting my foot caught on the front of the post and seat. The Duramax would be my choice. That is a real gentleman’s truck. It is quiet and gets good mileage and the trans is really really nice. The Ford also had a nice trans. The 5 speed autos are great. I wouldn’t mind having a D-Max. Dodge is really going to have to step it up. The 06 D-Max is going to be a great truck. Almost forgot the 01 Ford 7.3 lost its 4WD out in the boonies going up a hill. Felt bad for the guy.

well my 05 Dodge is still, and will remain for while, 100% stock but i am happy with the performance of the 48RE trans versus my old 47RE. especially in tow haul mode. I guess your to the point where $ doesn't matter though as long as you get the ultimate. A guy i work with just dropped $45K for his D-max vs. my $35K out the door.
I plan to keep my truck a long time and the more complex something is the more trouble in the long run. NO D-max or P/S (or should it be POS now) is going to be more durable than the cummins. Yes, I am PO'd a little that i dont have turn signals in the mirrors and that I need to spend $300 for four GOOD shocks that Dodge should install new especially WITH the tow package and i guess i need a $200 steering stabilizer also, but the same truck in a GMC was $2500 more to start. Mine has the basic 'good' options and i'm OK with it NOT having Dual climate controls and A$$ warmers :-) .
A friend has an 04 D-max with low HP chip and we were towing the same amount of weight and i kept up just fine over hills and on flat land. He got to 65 MPH a little quicker but not much . HOLDING 65 was no problem and Torque is what gets that done. ADVANTAGE DODGE.
I drove the new GMC and my Dodge is only SLIGHTLY more noisy inside and I'm plenty comfy inside. I took a long trip (50% of it towing) when it had only 500 miles on it and I think I'll make the other 59 payments. My .02, DAVE

People keep telling how good Ford is and Dodge is crap. But for some reason I just can't forget about my friends tranny eating Ford trucks. In fact, a good friend of mine yesterday installed tranny #3 on his '99.5 SD and the truck only has 75k miles on it.

He did say how much he liked my truck and he really liked the way it sounded. He never asked and I never told him my engine wasnt stock

Since I own both a 12 valve and a 7.3 let me say this, I bought the Ford because I like the Ford trucks more. I have had very few problems the 7.3 or the truck in general. I bought the 12 Valve because I love the sound and feel of the i6. Nothing majorly wrong w/ the Dodge. If the 7.3 ever blows I'll replace w/cummins for the simple fact that a little cheaper to by and easier to tweak. I drive both of them proudly and all that matters is it's not a CHEVY and it's burnin'oil 'n rattlin'.
