High fuel prices are due to demand being high and the supply being disrupted by the 4 hurricanes. Then we had a milder than usual winter so far and prices went down some. China has a growing economy and they also use a lot of the lighter sweet crude so it requires more resources to produce gasoline from sour crude.
I don't know what the impact of the military use of oil and gas in Iraq is but I'm sure it's significant. It's not as significant as domestic use or the demand from China and India.
Speculators drive the prices to fluctuate more on news rather than real supply/demand issues also. It's a psychological thing. They hear some news of increased demand or a supply disruption and the speculators drive the price up for profit. So the price is more volatile as a result of the speculators.

On the way down to the Fla Keys the price at the Micousukee pumps was $2.039. One
day later it went up three cents. In Miami I saw prices from $2.129 to $2.399 in one block, same brands. Down in Key Largo it was $2.129, in Marathon $2.299.

Holy moly, fuel prices just spiked here in WA.
Last week, I filled up at $2.019/gal. Same station today is $2.179/gal and they are the cheapest around.
Yikes! That's an increase of 16 cents a gallon, in less than a week!
Gas seems to be holding much steadier. Almost makes me wish I still had a gasser, as my fuel economy advantage is rapidly diminishing. Well, guess I still have my motorcycle, but riding in the rain in the winter stinks. Mainly because my bike gets REALLY dirty in quite the hurry..
