fair price for 2nd gen early 3rd gen dodges

ok sorry im sure this question has been asked a few time. I did search and I cant find anything.

basically im looking at pickups and im seeing a pretty wide margin of prices. ive seen late 2nd gens going anywhere from 8k-14k and early 3rd gens going for about the same and a bit more, im basically looking at 03s-04s for the 3rd gens.

so whats a decent price for a 2nd gen 24v say an 00-02.

whats a decent price for and 03-04 common rail. ive seen them as low as 9-10k, should I run from those??

and lastly how about a late 12v, when were those? 97-98.5 right??

Its just sometimes I see prices that are kinda high and I need to know if thats what there really going for or of the guy is xcrazy, I also need to know what prices are too low and send up red flags.

thanks, I know its a newb question, but...

Well i can tell you I just bought my 01 this last aug-sept and I paid 13000 for it having 120000 miles and in great shape. I always wanted a stick after haveing my auto so I jumped on it. Then in Dec I ran across a 05 4 door 4X4 1 ton auto with 28000 miles going for 25000. So I guess it is going to depend on your economy and how fed up the dealer is with sitting on it. For 3rd gens in south dakota it looks like 03-04s are going to run about 20,000 for a truck with 60,000-120,000 miles. Hope that helps some just my .02

Prices have been dropping at dealers and consequently the whole used market has dropped, and it will not get any better soon with all the layoffs.

Many people just shoots a price hoping somebody will go for it, but honestly they just sit in their yard unsold.

When a dealer sells 07 Megacabs with 50k miles for $ 25,00 or less, and Quad Cabs for $ 20k or less, evidently all the other years will drop considerably.

I recently sold my '03 for $ 11,500, and bought a 95 for $ 4500. I see used 3rd gen 4x4 from $ 8500 and up.

Mileage is a factor partially, I rather buy a high mileage from somebody that towed professionally (like I did) since they are most highway miles at constant temperature, instead of buying lo mileage but 10 mile work roundtrip daily driver, where the thermostat won't even open.
There's a reason why hauler's trucks last 300k and up to 1,000k and city drivers fall apart at 80k.

Don't be afraid to search nationwide, you will get some good deals if you can travel just a little. what the heck you can fly almost anywhere for $ 250 one way, but you might save many thousands from north to south.

Loki, where are you located? I have to 2nd valv's comment on looking at least regionally. If your in N. Texas, they are still pretty proud of the used ones, but if you look around you can find one at a really good price. for an early third gen I would say near the 20k mark is going to be the high side. They are already 5+ years old making financing more difficult for most people. I have noticed that if you drive a few of them you can tell pretty quickly which ones were well cared for and are going to be the cheapest to maintain.

What Valv said holds very true. One of the guys that drive with our group has over 700K on his truck and I would have never guessed it. I see trucks UP HERE that have been ruined in less then 20,000 kilometers...and just dumped at the dealers.
I know of several trucks GM Ford and Dodge that haul and have over 300K.
The high miles do not scare me as much as the ones that have been tuned to run hard for a short time. Been there and done that myself.
