Fact or Fiction- 27mpg duramax?

At the pump the other day I got into a palaver with a Duramax owner who said with a chip he was getting 24mpg towing and 27 mpg empty.

I was thinking, "yeah right, better take that summer course in remedial math".

What DO/CAN those trucks get as an average?

Big Jimmy

(not to turn this thread into a flame but I just don't like the look of those trucks)

Agreed... must be reading the overhead. With some chips the computer readout is way off.
I personally thing the Duramax is quite attractive...just not as tough built as I'd like!

that's all he's getting? If i am coasting downhill and reset my overhead mpg, i can get 99.9, why are we getting excited about 27?

20-21 is tops on summer fuel.

If he is running a chip it is throwing off his DIC readout.

Hand cal'd best i have seen on the I State unloaded is 21.2 MPG U.S.

But It can be pushed down to 13 when towing heavy or waiting for the yellow lights to go out.

Maybe the miles accumulated while on the back of the tow truck are throwing his readings off.

I have to agree with Rick. 23-24mpg is the best I've heard of in a Duramax and that requires a manual tranny. I would guess he is running a chip and is going off of the DIC and not hand calculating his mileage. With 5800 miles on the clock I'm averaging 19.5mpg (combined) in my stock truck. I haven't towed anything heavy yet, so that number could drop significantly.

Or maybe he's just an idiot. Some people just like to say stupid edited for prohibited language to make others feel bad or inferior. If it was was getting 24 mpg towing everyone would have one.

It's funny this came up. I was at a pump the other day when a guy with a 2000 Power Stroke told me he got 27 average. I didn't say a word, and told him I average about 20. I'll let him think he won.
