Duramax story, could it be true?

So today I am at Randy's Engine in Richfield, Utah. He is a machine shop who is pretty well known for doing some inovative stuff. (Gorrilla Girdle) He has purchased a CNC head porting machine from Rottler and is going to be a player in that business. Specializing in porting Cummins and Duramax heads. Nobody seems to want to do Fords. I am actually inside the machine prepping it for startup and Randy comes up to tell me this:

He just had a customer from Wyoming that he does some machine work for call. This customer had put together a pretty hot Duramax for an individual who had come in bragging about the ticket he got in Colorado. This Duramax was supposed to be lifted 6 inches and running "37"s. The story is he got caught doing 154 miles an hour. The plane chasing him couldn't keep up so they called in a road block and nailed the guy. Story is he is a fire chief. Well, a few weeks after he came in bragging to the shop about the 154 ticket, his truck devolops a terrible knock and racket. Turns out the crank is broke. This guy comes back to the shop and asks if they are going to "warranty" the engine they put together.

Anybody hear of this. I am skeptical but idiocy has no bounds. Who would be crazy enough to take a lifted truck on 37 inch tires probably rated for 90 mph that fast?

Hmmm Big fat tires, tall truck doing 154 MPH would need about 600 hp. Broken crank sounds obvious to me...

I've always heard the cranks on them break at 121.

154 on 37's? That would be like riding on a sponge at that speed. Not an engineer but I'm wondering if it could be done, show me the proof. I know trucks can run that on a track but they are lower, a bit more streamlined. Tell him to take it to the salt flats after he gets the crank replaced and prove it.

In all seriousness, 120-125 on 35's is realistic in my truck.

With stock tires it redlines at 112. Geared up 10% with the 35's and your right under 125mph.

I think over 150 is a stetch unless he has some crazy over/under drive. The duramax revvs out around 3000 rpms too.

154 with a lifted truck on 37's? I don't think so, like it was previously posted, take her to the salt flats and prove it. Getting to 120 is not that hard, 130 can be done, but the wind resistance at anything over 130 is incredible and the power required is not linear but exponential.

The Duramax speedometer and the ticket was in kilometers. I would believe the story then.

Hey, if he can outrun airplanes in that thing, no telling how fast it is. They probably gave him a break by only writing him up for 154.

I think he was going faster and just doesn't want to admit it. Doesn't everybody know about the 154 MPH broken crank rev limiter? It's there for our safety.

I knew that but did not want to say anything.

Iam gonna have to throw the BS Flag at the customer and that machine shop. They should know better. I can barely get mine to 109 on 35's before she trembles.

The crank...yeah that's belivable. I broke a CB superrace crank on my 200hp VW dunebuggy. It was probably crappy or not well balanced.
