duramax in the stable

i have been looking for a bigger truck. my wife drives a 98 quad cab shortbed 5 speed and the kids are just getting to big to fit them in worth a darn. so i have been looking at 7.3 X's and some crew cab chevys/gmc's. and the main thing i found was high prices man it is hard to get a diesel anything at a good price. well i went down to one of my favorite lunch hang outs and bought a 2001 gmc 4x4 crew cab shortbed with a duramax/allison. i would have really liked to get a 6 speed but they are hard to find. it is wrecked in the front with a dent in the bed. but the cab is all in good shape. so it looks like next weekend i will be tearing it apart and replacing the broke stuff. the frame may have a little tweek but that is easy enough to pull out. i figure the wife will like the extra room with the kids, but she will complain that it s not a stick. now i need to pick up a hood, right front fender, grill, intrcoller, radiator, airbags and a bumper. and who knows if she doesn't like it i may just keep it for myself.

Sounds like you bought one big project! Good luck! Is the truck running as it stands? Or did you have to tow it home?

.... and if the frame is bent?.... i can see you putting it back together in a couple days but pulling it apart and doing all the work is going to take more than that

if the frame is bent it will be tweaked in at the front, it wount take me 20 minutes to pull the frame horns out. nothing like having the right tools.

and i will probable put a 125 or 135hp box on it and call it done, i don't want to drop 7k in the allision. and forrest has dibs on the wife's 98 if i sell it.

I once bought a Chevy IFS that had been hit in the front. Good luck getting it to go straight and not chew tires! Seriously though, I hope if works out well for ya.

it is really pretty simple to straighten a frame if you have the right tools, hydraulics are your friend.

5 bucks says youll need more than airbags to have them work properly the next time, might as well start with pre-tensioners, a monitor and crash sensors. Once the monitor is full-as what happens when airbags are set off, it will not store anymore memory. Im not trying to knock you, or jump on the bandwagon, but there is much more expensive items that need replaced if the airbags go off, than just the airbags. Sounds like a fun project though
