Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Bummer to be them. I get 22 empty with Edge/Attitude, and loaded with 25 ft corn pro flat, The worst I have seen is 17. That was heavily loaded. Mine does have 5,000 miles on it now.

My mom's 04 gets around 15 to the gallon and it's got over 6K on it now. And it's only got a 24 gallon tank on there. Makes for a lot of fuel stops if you ask me.

Not sticking up for the Duramax, but it sounds like he probably is doing lots of little short hops with his lawn care business. That might partially explain the poor mileage.

I agree with you. 24 gallon tank. Are you sure? Look again in case. I hold more than that all the time. Last time I looked, I put in 31 gallon. :'(

Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Short bed has a 26 gal. tank.
My milage it 15 to 17 in town. 20+ on the highway, and 10-11 pulling at 19,500 Gross. That's with a high profile 5th wheel.
On a trip 2 years ago we were able to compare the DMax and a 1998 CTD both pulling trailers over about 2,200 miles. The milage was about the same over the exact same conditions.
Regards,
Bill

Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Why anyone buys a 7,500lb truck based solely on good fuel mileage is a mystery to me. ??? You got to remember these are 3/4 and 1ton trucks not some 4 cylinder compact car.
I bought the truck to pull what ever I wanted when ever I wanted, the mileage is a bonus for me, the pulling power is a big PLUS though. 8) I'd still be driving my Ram if it only got 8 mpg would make me any difference.

For me that's a big part of the draw. I don't tow full time. A full sized truck looks good, but the gassers, even smaller ones, get poor mileage. Big blocks get really poor mileage. But the diesel wins on both sides, low fuel consumption, and pull-anything power.
I don't see myself as a tree-hugging-hippy, but on the other hand I'd prefer to burn less fuel if possible. When comparing trucks of similar functionality, DMAX/CTD, mileage is just another benchmark, part of the total cost of ownership.

All Diesel 3rd Gen rigs have a 34 gallon fuel tank in the Short Bed and a 35 gallon tank in the Long Bed. The gasser Short Beds have the 26 gallon tank. I've verified this numerous times while filling up

Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Yeah, It was just as bad. I've seen several posts on here about low mileage. Usually when you read a Dmax post, they talk about mileage in the mid twenties (as in the one in my original post). Then they get unbelievable mileage towing. That one just seems very low based on what the other Dmax owners are claiming for mileage.

Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Just a thought ... when people complain about low miliage, I just ask a stupid question "how many pounds of air do you have in your tires?". I usually get the "I have no clue" stare.
There is a big difference in miles/gallon between trucks with 40 or so lbs in each tire compared to trucks with 65-70 lbs in each tire (which is what I run).
Just one simple thing to check for when one starts getting bad milage.
I find that dealerships keep the tires soft to make the ride softer for the potential customer.

Re:Duramax Mileage Towing ... Low
Well, I'm someone who bought a 3/4 ton truck because of the fuel mileage. The reasoning went something like;
1. I want three row seating plus room for stuff ( for example 7 to 8 people with camping gear for all),
2. Since no one seems to make such a thing, except for a large van which I didn't want, I'll modify a crew cab pickup,
3. If I get a truck it's gotta be a diesel for the mileage,
4. If I get a diesel it's gotta be a Cummins,
5. The only crew cab Cummins are the 2003 Dodges,
6. So I ended up with a 2500 SO ST with a 5 spd, put a canopy on it, and added a couple of bucket seats with belts in the bed.
Around town I get 17mpg and on the road just shy of 20 mpg so far, which is about the same that a friend gets on his 6 cyl Jeep and is much better than any of the large SUVs that people recommended so often. Other benefits are that the Cummins will last a lot longer than the gas engines, it cost a lot less than any of the large SUVs that people recommended, and it has a nice manual tranny. The family loves the truck, and the last time that I had as much fun driving was when I had a Suzuki GS1100ESD.
