Question Dumping the water out

Am i the only one who feels like the world freaks out when i dump the water out of my separator? I try to always dump it in a container of some kind, but you know how that goes cant always have what you need when you need it.

There is no set time you need to drain the water out of your filter. Just wait until you are in a good location, home is good, and have everything you need.

Out in the back alley is good. Keeps the weeds down too.

Drain?
These trucks have a fuel drain?

Seriously......in 75,000 miles, I have YET to see any
water in my fuel canister when I change filters.
I "drained the water" two times when I 1st got the truck in '99.
Haven't done it since.
I may just be getting better fuel.

Same here.

Drained it a couple times just because the owners manual said to.
Never saw a drop of water.

Only drain mine every 10,000 miles when I change the fuel filter.
Drain it into a jar that I let sit and seperate, haven't seen a drop of water there either.

Only reason I drain it when I change the filter is so I can wipe out any gunk collected since the last filter change.

I would think that as long as the WIF light stays off there is no need to drain the filter. When I forst got my truck the WIF light came on in rainy weather. I changed the filter and dumped the fuel in a jar but there was no water in it then. I understand that the WIF light is prone to go on even when there is no water.

SO unless you're just paranoid, draining the filter when you don't have the WIF light on is a waste of fuel.

How much fuel do you guys get out when you pull the water seperator valve, mine only lets out a few drops and stops, I even tryed turning key on to run lift pump and that had little effect.I called dealer and asked them and was told not much will come out but I still think thier is a problem. When I changed the filter I like to empty the bowl to get out any dirt that left behind when I lift filter out and could not even do that,a few drops and it quit.....Thanks for any help.

I've never seen water in the filter can. I drained it few times then gave up. I've never seen the water in fiuel light ever...

Yes, I will drain all contents when changing a filter though...

If I bump the starter and get the LP running it will pump mass amounts of fuel! But if I leave it all off it drains very slowy. Almost a trickling drip...

With filter lid off it drains at a fair rate... I guess it's just normal for it being a close system. Kinda a good thing huh!

I wait for the WIF light to come on, only drained it a couple times in over 200k.
If you do dump the fuel on the ground don't do it on asphalt, diesel tends to eat it.

The reason you guys never see any water is because the factory water separators are pretty worthless when it comes to separating water - they only really are good at fuel filtration. That's the exact reason I use an emulsifiying fuel additive - since the water that IS PRESENT in all fuel is passing through anyway, might as well make it pass through in the safest manner possible.

John Halter - check with your dealer, I believe there was a TSB for people with fuel filters that didn't drain properly. When I pull the yellow lever mine drains slowly, but it will drain out the entire cannister's worth of fuel in a minute or two.

There was. The fix was to open the valve and then turn your key on to get the lift pump going. That is supposed to blow out anything that might be clogging the hose.

I tryed starting lift pump and it didn't help much at all, I will talk to dealer on TSB. Their must be a restriction in thier some were, I even started it with valve open and got just a few drops. Wish I would have used the compresser and blew a little air down their when I was changing filter but I just didn't think of it at the time. Thanks everyone at least now I know for sure thier is a problem.
