Drove a 6 liter PSD today...(long)
Hello, Thought I would share this with you.

I stopped in the local Ford dealer today and he had an extended cab dually with the 6 liter and 5 speed auto so I decided to test drive it.

It was really cold so he started it and came back inside. The truck went to high idle and was ready to go fairly quickly. The engine had a different tone and seemed quieter than the old 7.3. It was definately more quiet than the 7.3 when on the road.

The drive: The truck drove great and felt solid. From what I have been hearing the engine was supposed to be extremely fast. After it had warmed sufficiently I stopped on a country road and then floored it. The truck accelerated smoothly, but it really didn't have the punch that I was expecting. It was a bit quicker than my Dad's 2001 PSD but not too much. I really wasn't that impressed with it, however, it is fairly quiet (If you like that) and smooth. My stock HO will set you back in the seat on take-off. The salesman stated "It's got a lot of power, eh". I told him that my truck was faster and it was a stick, but he didn't believe me. I even offered him a ride but he declined. I also think that the Cummins has a lot more in the lower end. From the short (ten mile) test drive I think that the Cummins will pull a trailer a lot easier.

Now to the 5 speed auto tranny. WOW!!
This thing is excellent. I haven't driven a lot of autos, but compared to the ones that I have the new one is worlds ahead. When in the standard mode normally shifting occurred. The upshifts are almost seamless. When the tow/haul button is engaged, though, is where it really shines. I was slowing for a turn and tapped the brake. At this it downshifted once. I then hit the brakes again and another downshift. It was almost like manually downshifting my truck. Excellent compression braking. Next, as I was approaching a stop sign I lightly hit the brakes. The tranny downshifted and as speed dropped it continued downshifting. One downshift was so strong that it threw me slightly forward in the seat. Not much brake pressure was needed to slow down. It felt as if the truck knew that I wanted to stop and helped by downshifting itself.

Conclusion:
The truck is well built and comfortable.
The engine is OK and seems to have enough power. It is no match for a HO though.
The transmission is outstanding.

If the rest of the package impressed me as much as the transmission I would have ordered one today.

These are just my opinions and my perception and experience is probably different than yours. Heck, my perception of things will probably change by morning. HA HA

See ya

I have two friends with the new PSD on order. I will be interested on what they have to say. Everything I have read states the new engine was made for the new body style and not the current one.

KC

What do you mean the new body style?

I haven't heard anything about Ford changing from the current body style. If so when will this happen and what changes to the engine compartment will be made?

You must have driven a doggy one. Most reviews are saying the 6.0 will walk off and leave the HO and Duramax.

Not that absolute power is everything. It's nice, but it wouldn't be the deciding factor (for me) in buying a truck. The HO has plenty of power; how much more do you need?

Oh,I read it on the internet so it must be true .I have little faith in reviews from any outfit that gets money from manufacturers or advertising.I will probably test drive a new 6.0,as we will probably see them here at work. After all the hype over the d-max my neighbor got one,I wasn't that impressed ...Doug

I guess I will have to try another one.

As far as the question "how much power do you need?" I don't need any more than my stock truck. In fact, my Dad's truck has enough. I'm not into racing. The reason that I include the engine review in my post is because I heard all the statements about how much quicker the truck is. It just seemed odd that the engine felt this way.

Could it be that the power delivery is different in the PSD? Maybe it was quicker than my truck but didn't feel that way. I didn't look at the speedometer when accelerating. Do most of the 6 liters push you back in the seat during hard acceleration?

Re:Drove a 6 liter PSD today...(long)
That transmission sounds a little scary for icy and snowy conditions. Not knocking the Ford or anything but a downshift that throws you forward would also easily break traction and send you out of control.

It only did this while the tow/haul mode was activated in the truck I drove. When I had it in the standard mode it shifted like any other auto.
