Drove a 6.0 powerstroke today

So I went for a drive in my friends 6.0 today and I just wanted to share my thoughts. I'm not sure what year it was but it was a crew cab dually with 6 or 7 inch dual stacks. He's got an egr delete, head studs, bigger turbo, off-road injectors from an International 365(not sure what application that would be in), and a hypertec programmer set on economy mode. The tranny felt like it was built up or at least had a shift kit in it too.

My final verdict: Interesting, but not for me. First of all, I hate the sound of the engine and exhaust just sounds silly. Above 2k rpm, the exhaust noise kicks in and it sounds similar to the 5.4L gasser(junk) which sounds like chewbacca from starwars. When I put my foot down it pulled pretty hard but I had to let off shortly after 2nd gear cause of the 35mph speed limit. It just did not have I mean business sound of a straight six that I love. Plus its a Ford.

Yeah, I haven't driven in a Ford, but I've heard em, and I have driven a duramaxi. I have driven a stock 7.3, and it felt like I was draggin a tree behind it. And nothing beats the sound of an I6. If I own a diesel, I want it to sound like it. My buddies Chevy sounds the same as a 350 when hes gettin on it....and i remind him of it all the time.

You think they're a joy to drive with an auto? Try one with the 6spd behind it. Our shop had an 03 F550 with the 6.0/6spd combo and I had the pleasure of delivering a set of D6N tracks to the local Cat dealer trackshop. Got in it and darn near stalled it in traffic from shifting too low of an rpm (less than 2k) from being used to the low end torque of my 93' and 04 CTD. Said screw it and put it to the pin for every shift. That truck would make a great boat anchor.

I will say though, that the Ford medium duty line rides WAY better than the GM. My 5500 GMC at work rides like a lumber wagon, I've bottomed out the shock in my seat a few times

I don't know what the Hypertech programmer does. With a SCT programmer and custom tunes you need to provide both the engine and trans strategies. This allows you to adjust the firmness of the shifts either = or - 20%. My 6.0 sounds like a gasser big block when I get on the skinny pedal. It is almost straight piped. Keith

A 6.0 can boogey, but I don't like them for hauling anything. I've driven a variety of privately owned 6.0's, and we have a F550 bucket truck at work with a 6.0, and if you mash the throttle all the time it will get on the highway. It's a total headache to tow a 5k trailer though (plus the 1 ton boom and utility box/stock etc.) with no power below 2k. I'm not a fan of the exhaust note with anything but a stock exhaust, they sound broken.

I will say though the new 6.7 Ford is a different animal, slow as anything getting going but once it's outta 2nd gear it pulls good, right down to 1500 rpm. We got 6 F450 utility trucks at work (lower power output on CC) and they are much easier to move weight around with then the 6.0. Mileage is still crappy though, can't be much more than a ton/ton and a half on the rear and they aren't getting more than 11 mpg. The one I drove in today stays in town mostly and is reading 9.5

Yea my brother has to drive one everyday, his direct quote "I go out in the morning, unplug it, look underneith for any leaks, get in, cross my fingers and hope it starts." Just picked up a 06 5.9l Cummins last thursday that will be installed when the 6.0l boat anchor craps out again.

Yeah. It really cracks me up. I'm working for a towing company right now. I mainly do the light duty stuff but we do medium duty stuff too and we are just breaking into the heavy duty stuff. Anyways, we've towed more 6.0s than anything else (not sure if we've done any cummins). The medium duty guy gets an earfull about how crappy the 6.0s are from the customers and he's a ford guy himself. Its just hilarious.

drove in a veteran friends 06 6.0 last week and I noticed it put out a big white smoke show out the exhaust about 2 blocks back.. I said that isn't good found out after. yep blown egr cooler and found out head gasket has gone too.
well I guess with that said its a good time to clean the truck off when the cab has to come off now. he didn't like that comment..

Some friends had an 03, 6.0-oh-no and were bugging us about our truck being only a 6 cylinder. Well, their egr went, head gaskets went , busted a piston, scored cylinder walls. They were 4 months past the engine warranty and under on mileage, Ford said "too bad". The motor was a complete write off, they traded it off on a V10.
