Getting back to the original thread, I have to look at what is running up and down our highways. I also listen to some of the drivers that own and operate the big rigs. It is their opinon that nothing overseas can top todays American rigs. Volvo had to buy MACK to get their engines to run up to par with the rest of the field. The cowboys at Hess would rather drive the old KW instead of the new Volvo. I know what your are thinking. What has Volvo got to do with german diesels? Nothing except there aren't many german diesels on the road arond here and that is all that I can compare with. Look at it this way, if the foriegn diesels were surperior wouldn't there be more of them running the interstate?

[QUOTE=Rammer64]I spoke to the rep again today after training. He explained that the MBE900/920 series has a proven track record and that they have them in stock for basically free. They currently have to buy the Cummins engines to install in their trucks.

does this meen that the price would go down on 2007 trucks i meen they are already the cheapest diesel on the road today.

Probably showing my ignorance here, but if I could compare it to the light duty (I guess that's the right phrase) diesel market - several car companies, including Mercedes, Nissan, and Toyota will not begin bringing their diesels to the US market in any kind of numbers until the 2007 diesel fuel regulations are in place, due to the crappiness of our diesel fuel. Could this be the same reason for the larger over the road engines? Dunno - just a thought....

I did talk to a Nissan engineer a year or so ago that said they have diesels for their Frontiers and Titans - but they can't get them to run reliably with the crap that suffices for diesel here in the US and Canada. They're looking at putting diesels in them once the 07 regs are in place. Not that I'd buy a Frontier or Titan - just an example.

I have nothing to base this opinion on but I would find it quite odd if some of the countries where these other diesels are sold have better quality diesel than we do. I'm thinking like the latin American countries for instance where, if I'm not mistaken, there are several small diesel powered trucks sold.

Screw Mercedes! Didya ever see how much they charge for parts and filters? I had a Mercedes engine in my boat many moons ago. After the first two years of paying thru the nose for just about every part, I got wise and put a Cummins B series in. Now I just wish I could have a B3.9 in my truck.

I believe that at least the #2 in europe is of a higher quality than ours here in the states. Supposedly that's what the '07 stanards will be up to...maybe it's no accident that it may also be the first year the Merc diesel is in the Dodge...I know there's been an I-5 turbo diesel available for the Grand Cherokee in europe since 99 or 00. Like to see it mine....

I thought dodge had cummins till at least 2010 or so?? I thought cummins was switching to a VVT turbo in 07 anyway, to handle the emission problems?? All i know is that i hope like crazy they dont drop the CTD for a mercedes. I am serious in that i think i would cry if they switched. My Cummins aint just a motor. It has a soul! I will NEVER sell the truck i have if they quit making the cummins. I will keep it till the day i die if its possible for me to do so.

Jeez, I can't believe how easy you guys are to convince. We are talking about 1 person hearing a "rumor" and you guys are taking it for the gospel. The Cummins contract is still in place, and was recently extended to 2010, if I recall correctly. I can find 5 other post of people that are in the "know" that say the Cummins engine isn't going anywhere.

DCX is too smart to blindly drop the 5.9ISB cold turkey. If it is there long term goal to rid themselves of Cummins, they will do it gradually. Knowing that people are motivated by money, I can bet that you will see them offering a MB engine as an option, just as they do the Cummins. However, to incent people to go with the MB engine, I can see that they will have hte MB have close to the same specs as the Cummins, but have the price at a fraction of the cost. How couldn't people not go with the MB (Prices and #'s are fictitious, but do illustrate my point)

6.1L Hemi 440HP/420 tq Standard
6.4L MB 330 hp/1000tq $2500
6.7L Cummins 350 hp/700 tq $5000

DCX is basically getting the MB engines for very little cost. They can present them as a low cost upgrade, compared to the Cummins, but with comporable specs to the Cummins. In the end, money does count, and DCX can gradually start moving people to the MB engine.

I for one believe none of this. If there were going to be a MB engine, to me the most logical choice would be for DCX to put it in the Medium Duty lineup (if those HP/TQ are correct). 1000 ft/tq is WAY too much straing on a work light duty truck.

Maybe it's not a rumor. It's a possibility that the MBE900 series will be the standard engine for the upcoming medium duty Dodge truck.

Yes, it is common and public knowledge that the Cummins contract was already previously extended to 2010 with some product development contracts already extending past that. This isn't to say a MB diesel won't make it into another DC product before 2010 but it is reasonable to suggest it won't be in a Ram 2500 or 3500 until then. We have heard about the 1500 CTD rumours before......maybe a MB engine is a possible canidate for this? Time will tell but with DC already making large investments in Cummins for future joint ventures, MB or no MB, it doesn't appear as if DC is planning on dumping Cummins altogether anytime soon.

OH GAWD, PLEASE LET THIS COME TO FRUITION!!!!!

I would love to see the CUMMINS available in something else other than a RAM!!

2 years, 5 years, 10 years, who cares!!! [edited by admin]

I can wait.....................

I would even consider a FORD with a CUMMINS.

And that should tell you how much the Dodge Ram sucks right there........................ .............................

Huh? I've sampled them all over the years. Even insulted our veterans a couple of times. I've come to the conclusion I'll take a Dodge with gas or diesel over anything the others have to offer. My next truck might be a Dodge with a Mercedes diesel in it but it won't be a Fraud with anything in it. Almost 25k on my '05 gasser with not one trip to the dealership for anything. No new car bugs, tweeks, nothing. I understand the new Fords are making it past the test drive without crapping out.
