Dodge and Cummins>>>>>>>Mercedes
We had a Tech Rep from Detroit Diesel come in today at work who was teaching us some new techniques for the MBE900 series Mercedes in our fleet. As we were talking, He said that the new emission standards put in place for 2007 will put the MBE900 series in the RAM pickup instead of the Cummins. It will be the OM902LA rated at 330hp and 1000 ft/lbs of torque.
The OM902LA is a stroked EGR'd version of the OM906LA.
The Cummins will no longer be an option appearently, and the Mercedes transmission will eventually be the start of a complete driveline change.

Well, we also had a training course on the Snap-On Modis scan tool. The rep was showing us how since 1996 most manufacturers have installed GPS hardware in the vehicles. The GPS units are being used more and more. The Canadian government is following suit with the U.S.A. and Europe to set new emission standards for 2007. Trucks will have to comply by 2007 and cars by 2008. The manufacturers have been ordered to comply to utilize the GPS units to transmit vehicle emissions via satelite to MOE and licencing offices.
For instance.........If you have a spark plug or injector go bad or a sensor go outta wack, the emissions will be constinately monitored, recorded and transmitted to the government who will send you a notice to have your vehicle inspected/re-tested or you will be subject to a possible fine or licence plate revoked.
I look at it as another tax grab like the emission test and air conditioning tax or Canada's "TIRE "tax

That's really something...Now the first BOMB will have to be a stand alone copy of your engine management system that can tell the gov't sattelites what they want to hear. I'd take a Merc with 330/1000

I wonder how long it will be until someone comes up with a programmer to send false info to the gov't about the emissions readouts so you'll be able to mod the truck and not worry about uncle sam coming after you?????

I don't care who manufactures the engine. First in priority is having the truck run reliably, second is fuel economy, third is power, fourth is fit and finish of the body. I can put up with a lot of crap out of a body, I just cant stand a truck that doesn't go when you turn the key.....
If the mercedes proves to be a reliable fuel efficient engine, I'll buy one.....

Did they mention anything about the Detroit engines that are being tested for the pick up market? With Mercedes, Detroit and Dodge all under the same umbrella...I can see how this makes sense.
Mercedes knows how to make a good motor too.

This Detroit Diesel training rep does have alot to say about the MBE900 series and all comments are good. He's been with DDC for 19 years and claims that the MBE900 has proven to be very dependable. He says they've had a few problems at first but was corrected after the first 150 engines. The MBE900 series have been around since 1995.

Well, now I shall tempt all of you inline fans, but I hope that when the Cummins is replaced it is by a V-8.
I understand that it would really stink for all of you guys that actually work their trucks, but come on, I need a good V-8 Diesel engine...
I mean, the Cummins I-6 can out top-end a Navistar V-8. Imagine what a Cummins-par V-8 would be capable of.
