Dodge 1500 Diesel

FastZilla;
I don't know what warrenty stipulations you have on your new rig, but I'm in the Wheaton area, and I have found that DJ's Auto and Truck in Plainfield is about the best place to take my '96 for service. (It was reccommended on this site.) If you must go to a dealer, try Schaumburg Dodge, for whatever reason, they handle a lot of commercial vechiles and know the Cummins well. They also have lower overhead than several of the other dealers.
There are plenty of CTD's in Illinois! Just like the "friendliness level" of our people, it takes a little more time to find these trucks, and it takes a bit longer to be known here, but it will happen!

While a V-8 Diesel won't have the low powerband, longetivity, or simplicity as the I-6, it will drive like a gasser. If geared correctly, it could outperform any gasser on the road. I dearly hope that it isn't marketed as a towing motor; instead, I hope they gear it to out-do the Hemi in the Quarter and screw hauling performance. Who hauls with a 1500 anyways?
Diesels have 30%+ more power per cube than gassers and are approxiamately twice as thermally efficient as gasoline engines. If designed to, and with good engineering, a Diesel engine WILL be able to out-gas a gasser. Outperform it in every way. And I PRAY TO GOD that they are designing this V-8 for performance, not work.

i don't understand why they're bothering to develop a new engine fow the half tons when they could pull the tried and true 4BT off the shelf today. it'd be a more durable engine and much of the 6BT aftermarket parts fit them, not to mentiuon they could charge less for them since they're not recouping as much R&D mone.

for all you sniveling about the V8 configuration in the half ton trucks, lemme point out a few things:
1) an I-6, even a smaller one than the ISB or 6BT, is very heavy. remember these are half tons. there's a reason dodge hasn't put a 1200lb engine in a half ton thus far.
2) why eschew the good for the perfect? is a properly desinged V8 diesel good as a, I-6? no. is it way better than a gasoline powered truck? yes.
3) bear in mind that these are going into half ton trucks. no one buys a half ton for pulling monster loads, but why not a full size half ton getting 25+MPG that has gasoline like throttle response?
4) having said all that, i'm still in favor of DC using the 4BT in the small trucks.

Several reasons I can think of for not using the 4bt (good as it is...)
Vibration
Weight
Emissions (Most 4bt's are not electronically controlled)
"Image" (who would buy a 4-cylinder full size truck in this country?)
I do believe that Cummins builds a lighter duty Inline 6, this would be a smoother and less weighty option, but again, it has to meet the very strict emissions standards, and keep meeting them after '07. Please, don't forget this factor looming over our heads!
Good to see other Illinois people here!

Once again, I hope that they DO NOT put an I-6 into the trucks. I-6's have torque down low, less horsepower up high. Not a good street racer, but a good puller. It would be a much better performer if it is a V-8. Who would want to drag race a Duramax or Powerstroke stock with their Cummins? If Dodge wants to have a performance/ racing image on this Diesel, it NEEDS to be a V-8.
Don't care what Gear Vendor's tells you, gentlemen- revolutions do matter.

Ill tell you what. Ill race ANY brand new stock Duramax or Powerstroke and show him who his daddy is with my 10 year old little ol'e 5.9 Cummins. I do have a few mods, but they cost me about $500 or a little more if you count the gauges, and ill wear any of them out. Ive smoked a duramax(automatic) pretty bad(he had an air intake), and ive had to let out of it to keep from eating the hind end out of a 6.0l ford(automatic), and he didnt even have a bed on it. Just a wooden flat, which means was probably fairly light. The new Cummins's aint no slouch whatsoever, and i would put one against a new D-max or Powerstroke, and even if they did win it wouldnt be by much. Forget a V-8. Give me an inline 6. You dont need high revs if they would throw a good automatic tranny behind it that kept it right in its power. Thats the only reason those D-Maxxes, and 6.0L's are so tough stock. They're pretty weak with a 6spd.
